I don’t normally step out of my lane into the world of video games, but when it comes to this announcement, it feels like a planets-aligning kind of moment (although, in the Eldritch Horror world, an alignment of planets most likely indicates the end of humankind in the next hour or so). You see, I’ve only just landed myself a copy of the board game, something I’ve been very keen to try out ever since falling in love with Arkham Horror LCG. And now this news from Fantasy Flight Games! It’s almost like the Ancient Ones are trying to tell me something.
Asmodee and Fantasy Flight Games have teamed up with Cornerstone Software Development to bring Eldritch Horror to a PC monitor near you. Featuring the beloved characters and mechanics, faithfully adapted to a new medium, the digital edition of Eldritch Horror also enhances the experience with voiced dialogue (YES!), faster gameplay and music dripping in 1920s occult aesthetic.
Much as you do in the board game of mystery and terror, players will need to assemble a team from all walks of life. Ex-soldiers, psychic mediums, grizzled sailors, reformed cultists and more will be needed to thwart the rise of the incomprehensible Ancient Ones. These unfathomable beings are awoken by cultists and monsters across the world in veiled conspiracies and secret rites. Players will need to race against time as the doom of the world steadily advances towards them.
The world will quickly hurtle towards rescue or defeat as the digital medium eliminates bookkeeping for players. Eldritch Horror will now feature sped up gameplay as all of the token, card and records are handled digitally: allowing players to experience adventure after adventure without the wait. Clearly, and obviously, a different medium will bring a different experience, and I for one feel that there’s plenty of room for both the physicality of the board game, and the convenience of a videogame version.
It’s expected to release some time in the New Year on Steam. Do we dare hope for an Android/iOS version in the months after? Perhaps we just need to make the appropriate sacrifices… ahem, I mean requests. Ha ha. Sacrifices, silly me…
