Roll And Play: Game Masters Fantasy Toolkit review

Roll And Play: Game Masters Fantasy Toolkit artwork

The Game Master’s Fantasy Toolkit from Roll & Play Press is a compact but impressively comprehensive resource for tabletop RPG enthusiasts. Whether you’re a seasoned Dungeon Master looking to add fresh texture to your sessions or a newcomer (like myself!) still finding your footing, this 102-page spiral-bound A5 book offers a wealth of inspiration at your fingertips.

The toolkit is built around an extensive collection of random tables covering almost every scenario you might encounter during a game of D&D, Pathfinder, etc. Need a name, appearance, motivation, and career history for the previously throwaway NPC that your players have suddenly and inexplicably decided to interrogate? A few rolls of the d20 will have you covered. Want to generate the name, musical style, and instrument of the tavern band your party has wandered over to? Easy peasy. Looking to add a little extra flair to a dramatic natural 20 during a climactic fight? The book has a plethora of options ready to go.

The content here is organised into five clear, intuitive sections:

  • People & Quests
  • World Building
  • Journeys & Events
  • Combat & Injuries - Items & Rewards

What’s more, each of these sections are broken down further into focused subcategories. For me, Journeys and Events is probably the most useful, providing a variety of intriguing encounters and points of interest for your players to explore while they're travelling from Point A to Point B. Pretty much every conceivable environment ("Frozen", Forest", "Swamp", etc.) has its own table of 12 prompts that you can either choose from or roll at random, and while the prompts themselves aren't particularly in-depth, they do serve as great jumping-on points for a situation that can easily be fleshed out based on how the players react to it.

For example, your characters are travelling through a city on a larger quest, but you want to give them something to occupy themselves with for a while before heading to the next part of the story. You flick to the "Urban Encounters" page, roll a D12 (which comes up with a 4), and you get the following prompt - 'Guards approach the party holding a bounty poster and ask them if they have seen the individual listed'. Immediately, there's about a dozen different ways this can play out based on how you as the DM take it or the players themselves decide to act, and before you know it, you've had an hour or two of fun, bounty-based shenanigans!

Given the wealth of options and tables contained within this tome, it's impressive how well laid out it is, with everything grouped together in a clean, logical manner. This intuitive structure makes it simple to find what you're looking for without slowing the pace of play, which is something of a godsend when the party is waiting impatiently to hear what happens next.

It's worth mentioning that even if you'd prefer not to leave things entirely to the whims of the dice, the contents of this book serve as excellent creative prompts during advance session prep. As creative as we DMs are, sometimes you can hit a bit of a wall when you're preparing your notes, and (for me, at least) coming up with random names, character quirks, encounters, etc. can sometimes feel like a bit of a chore. So it's fortunate that whether you’re trying to enrich a storyline, populate a bustling tavern, or inject some unexpected encounters into your adventure, a brief browse of this book is often enough to spark new ideas.

The presentation is clean and functional. Minimalist artwork frames well-designed tables, and the system-agnostic approach ensures compatibility with any RPG without the need for clunky stat conversions. Some entries, particularly those involving monsters, may require a little additional research with your system of choice, but the book’s focus is clearly on inspiration rather than rules crunch, which is - to me, at least - part of its main appeal. For aspiring DMs or anyone who struggles with improvisation when players inevitably wander off the beaten path (curse them!), this toolkit is an invaluable asset. Whatever your level of experience, The Game Master’s Fantasy Toolkit is an essential inclusion in any DM’s Bag of Holding.
