Magic: The Gathering – Foundations Play Booster Pack Review

FOUNDATIONS

In the grand scheme of things, I am a MTG baby. Having only be playing for the last 4 years, I wouldn’t consider myself a seasoned player at all. However, MTG is for everyone – from those who have been playing since the game’s inception, to those who are only just considering getting into the game – and the release of the Foundations set is a buffet of cards for all players; there really is something for everyone!

The Building Blocks For Your Next Deck

Foundations has been designed to welcome new players to MTG with straightforward, easy to use cards that can be used across a range of formats, whilst continuing to appeal to more veteran players with the inclusion of some big reprints, alongside new powerful cards. Foundations is certainly the most versatile set this year!

Mechanics To Hold It All Together

To prevent any confusion amongst players, Foundations hasn’t included any new mechanics. Returning to our games, Foundations brings back mechanics such as:

Flashback: Allows players to recast an instant or sorcery from their graveyard, at an alternative cost, exiling the card after the spell leaves the stack

Kicker: An additional casting cost that allows an additional effect to be achieved on the spells resolution

Landfall: An additional effect or payoff that triggers when a land enters the battlefield

Morbid: A different effect of a spell or ability that occurs if a creature died in the same turn the spell/creature was cast

Prowess: Gives the creature a +1/+1 until end of turn, if a non-creature spell was cast

Raid: An advantage given when a creature attacked in the same turn

Threshold: A change in a cards ability if its controller has 7 or more cards in their graveyard

Spicy New Cards For Decoration

Whilst it’s always nice to get a reprint of an old card with new art, there’s something to be said for the excitement of new cards, especially when you find cool ways to play them! Foundations is no exception when it comes to a roster of powerful new cards, such as:

Sire of Seven Deaths: A 7 mana Eldrazi titan, with a wealth of terrifying key words

Hare Apparent: A new white creature that allows multiples to be within a deck, without penalty!

Kaito, Cunning Infiltrator: A new, blue Planeswalker that gathers loyalty counters at pace when you deal damage to opponents

Bloodthirsty Conqueror: (In my opinion) an absolutely filthy include to any vampire or life gain deck

Twinflame Tyrant: A flying damage doubler in the form of a red, two headed dragon

Preposterous Proportions: A ridiculous sorcery that is a haymaker blow for your opponents!

Banner of Kinship: An anthem card for any tribal creature deck

Do The Foundations Hold Up?

Foundations is an accessible set that welcomes new players into the world of MTG. Experienced players will be delighted with both the valuable reprints and the powerful new cards, making this set a solid one for sure! I for one am excited to upgrade my commander decks with some new cards, as well as being able to affords some upgrades thanks to reprints helping with their affordability!
