Gather your instruments, it’s time to swing and jive into a world of musical possibilities. Bebop is a dice-driven placement game where you gain control over an area by placing your dice. As you attract seats, attracts fans and perform by the end of the game you’ll find who is the ultimate virtuoso.
Bebop is designed by Robert Hovakimyan with production done by Bitewing Games. Seating 2 to 4 players aged 14 and upwards, Bebop is based on the Jazz music of the old days. Your bands will be performing at festivals to claim seats and book them before the music starts. Will you be able to place your dice in families to score the most points?
How Does it Play?
Winning Bebop involves matching the right dice with the right seats on the board. Jazz performances will take place during the game as each group of matching coloured dice powers up together.
Bebop transcends simple colourful arrangements and symbols; it’s a tactical and poised game. While the visuals are captivating, the essence lies in managing your resources throughout the evolving match.
Central to the game is pool building. As you progress, you gather more dice expanding your strategic options and enabling more intricate manoeuvres in later stages.
What Games is it Like?
The Castles of Burgundy offers perhaps the strongest mechanical comparison. Much like Burgundy, Bebop revolves around placing dice on a board to trigger specific actions. This captures that satisfying “mechanical basis” of translating dice results into meaningful progress.
The White Castle also shares a similar “tightly controlled extravaganza” DNA. In The White Castle, gardeners and warriors climb Japanese social ranks while in Bebop colours and dice placement guide players to the most efficient path forward optimising every turn.
Yahtzee even finds its place in Bebop’s lineage. The fundamental excitement of rolling dice to achieve the best possible combination of symbols and options is present here, offering players a wide range of choices before committing to a move.
Should You Buy it?
If you have liked any of the games, I have mentioned then Bebop will be right up your street. Simpler than complex titles but in a sweetspot of enough meat to keep heavy gamers happy.
