The battles of Middle-earth are about to get even bigger! Ares Games has announced Sieges of Middle-earth, a new expansion for War of the Ring that brings some of Tolkien’s most famous battles to the tabletop. The expansion is set to arrive in retail in December 2026, giving fans of War of the Ring another reason to return to Middle-earth before the year is out.
And this time, the focus is on some seriously massive sieges!
The battle is about to get bigger!
Sieges of Middle-earth introduces new mechanics based around the great sieges described in J.R.R. Tolkien’s works. That includes two of the most famous conflicts from The Lord of the Rings: the Battle of Helm’s Deep and the Siege of Minas Tirith. These battles are a huge part of the story, with the Free Peoples desperately defending key strongholds against overwhelming Shadow forces. Now, those desperate defensive battles are being brought into War of the Ring with new rules and resources. If you thought the battles in the base game could get intense, adding giant fortifications and siege weapons to the mix could make things considerably more chaotic!
Bring out the Siege Engines!
The Shadow player is getting some serious new tools to work with. The expansion adds Siege Engines, including Siege Towers and Catapults, giving the forces of Shadow new ways to attack heavily defended locations. These aren't just there for decoration either. The new mechanics are designed to represent the challenges of breaking through the Free Peoples' defences during a major siege. For the Shadow player, that means having more options when attempting to overwhelm the defenders. Siege warfare becomes another weapon in the fight for Middle-earth!
The Free Peoples fight back!
Of course, the defenders aren't being left completely helpless. The Free Peoples gain access to new Heroic Feats, giving them ways to try and turn the tide when their forces are under siege. That fits perfectly with some of Tolkien's most memorable battles. Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith weren't simply about throwing armies at each other. The defenders had to hold their ground, make the most of limited resources, and find opportunities to strike back. The new Heroic Feats look set to give the Free Peoples some additional ways to do exactly that.
A new resource
Sieges of Middle-earth also introduces a completely new resource for the Free Peoples: Fellowship tokens. These tokens can be used by the Free Peoples during the game, but there's an interesting twist once they're spent. Used Fellowship tokens transform into Palantir tokens, which then become a resource for the Shadow player. That creates an interesting connection between the two sides. Resources used by the Free Peoples don't simply disappear from the game. Instead, they can eventually provide something for the Shadow player to work with. It sounds like the sort of mechanic that could force both sides to think carefully about when and how they use their resources.
December can't come soon enough!
Sieges of Middle-earth is scheduled to hit retail in December 2026, expanding the War of the Ring experience with new mechanics centred around some of the biggest battles in Tolkien's world. For fans of War of the Ring, the expansion offers a chance to revisit Middle-earth while putting a greater emphasis on the enormous defensive battles that helped define The Lord of the Rings. With Siege Towers and Catapults joining the Shadow forces, Heroic Feats giving the Free Peoples new ways to resist, and Fellowship and Palantir tokens adding another layer to resource management, there's plenty for both sides to get stuck into. Middle-earth has seen plenty of battles over the years, but when December rolls around, it's time to build some walls, load the catapults, and prepare for the siege!
