Are you craving some Gothic spookiness in the darkness of Halloween’s shadow? Never fear, Vampires are near…
New self-published board game Vampire Lords has hit Gamefound, and people are already sinking their teeth into it! Created by Couple of Games, (board game couple Weronika Galas and Maciej Galas), the game reached its funding goal of €25,000 in just 7 minutes and 26 seconds!
The Game
Set in 15th -century Romania, Vampire Lords is an area control and deck-building game that requires strategic play. Players will take on the roles of powerful vampires seeking to gain more abilities, forge alliances, and achieve victory. The main mechanic of the game lies within playing action cards which can be used to take command of a player’s armies and vampires. The player who conquers and claims five towns wins – if you want to do it alone of course. If not, work together with a fellow vampire to control eight towns and strengthen both your alliances and power!
Vampire Lords is designed for 1-6 players, with an average playtime of 1-2 hours. It is also available in at least six different languages, including English, German, Spanish, and Italian. Many features of a wargame are evident in Vampire Lords – the board for one is a large map with towns and villages laid out for you to conquer! With conquering of course comes battle!
Wargame Mechanics
Players summon units (living and dead) to fight on behalf of their vampire lord. The side with more forces gets an immediate advantage by rolling a higher-value combat die! Opposition is no stranger to these vampire lords, as human uprisings can occur that must be taken care of. Alongside these classic wargame features, the deck-building side to this game brings a fresh take and exciting premise. Each vampire lord possesses their own deck with cards unique to them. A market phase allows for more cards to be bought, and a graveyard mechanic helps you cycle through cards to find more that are useful to you. Players may find this similar to Magic the Gathering‘s graveyard and deck mechanics.
A Promising Start
Alongside Vampire Lords’ impressive funding, it has received a lot of praise for it’s artwork, components, and general premise. With a current score of 8.4 on Board Game Geek (though this is only from few reviews that have been released so far), it definitely proves as a board game to get very excited about!
