SCP Foundation board game creeps onto Gamefound

Strap on your security clearance badge and grab your emergency light – SCP Foundation is officially hitting the tabletop. After years of tinkering, tweaking and reworking, SCP The Boardgame: Confidential Crisis has finally launching on Gamefound.

This isn’t the first time the project’s been in the spotlight. Developer DigDeep originally took it to Kickstarter back in 2021, but that campaign was cancelled. Now they’re back, older, wiser, and (hopefully) ready to deliver the spooky goods.

What’s the Game About?

Confidential Crisis is a fully cooperative board game where you and your team manage agents from the Foundation. Your job? Keep humanity safe from all the creepy anomalies lurking out there.

You’ll:

  • Upgrade your clearance level
  • Explore map tiles
  • Face off against dangerous SCP entities
  • And complete objectives tied to your chosen story scenario
  • Think secret labs, rogue monsters, and plenty of tension.
  • A Crash Course in SCP

If you’re new to the SCP world, here’s the gist: the SCP Foundation started as a fan-driven, collaborative fiction website. Fans write “case files” about bizarre, supernatural creatures and artifacts kept under lock and key by a mysterious organisation.

There are now over 8,000 SCP entries, but this board game zeroes in on the first 1,000 – the ones fans know and love. That means you can expect to bump into legends like SCP-682 (aka the “hard to kill lizard”). Later SCPs often get more experimental, but the early ones are perfect for classic monster-hunting vibes.

A Bumpy Road to Release

It hasn’t been all smooth sailing for DigDeep. The 2021 Kickstarter stirred up controversy when backers accused the team of planting fake positive comments. The studio later admitted to making “foolish mistakes” and apologised.

Fast forward to 2023, and the Gamefound launch was actually delayed for months so the team could send prototypes to reviewers – something that was missing the first time around. Those prototypes are now out in the wild, and at least one full playthrough is online if you’re curious.

Should You Be Excited?

The minis look solid, the theme is killer, and the co-op gameplay sounds promising. But presentation-wise, it’s still a bit of a mixed bag – the trailer in particular has left some fans wary. Whether Confidential Crisis ends up being a hidden gem or just another anomaly remains to be seen.

Final Thoughts

Love the SCP universe? This might be your chance to bring all that creepy lore to your game nights. Even if DigDeep is still finding its footing, the idea of securing, containing, and protecting on the tabletop is pretty irresistible.

Just remember: don’t break containment.
