If you’ve ever dreamed of your Monopoly money being worth something in real life… well, this is probably as close as it gets. To celebrate 90 years of family feuds, dodgy deals, and shouting “You can’t build a hotel there!”, the Royal Mint has released a shiny new 50p coin dedicated to Monopoly.
What’s on the Coin?
And it’s not just any old 50p. This colourful little collector’s piece is packed with classic Monopoly vibes – Mr Monopoly himself (aka Rich Uncle Pennybags) complete with cash bags, property cards, houses, hotels, and even fan-favourite tokens like the Scottie dog and top hat. Tilt the coin at the right angle and the famous ‘GO’ square magically transforms into the Monopoly “M” symbol. Fancy.
A First for Board Games
It’s the first time a board game has ever been honoured on UK currency, which feels about right – Monopoly has been teaching us all about “mischief and mayhem” (and the perils of family game night) for nearly a century. Since its 1935 debut, it’s been translated into 47 languages, sold over 275 million copies, and probably been the cause of just as many family arguments.
Of course, you won’t find this 50p rattling around in your change. Nope – you’ll need to buy it direct from the Royal Mint. Prices start at £15 for a standard uncirculated edition, £25 for the full-colour version, and a whopping £1,730 if you want the deluxe gold edition. (Yes, that’s a lot of Monopoly money.)
Superfans are already hyped. Guinness World Record holder Neil Scallan – who owns the world’s largest Monopoly collection – called the coin the “holy grail” of collectibles. Pretty high praise.
The Ultimate Coin Hunt
And if that wasn’t enough fun, the Royal Mint is also running the “ultimate Monopoly UK coin hunt”. A giant silver top hat will be roaming the streets of London (yes, really), and if you spot it, snap a pic, and post it online with the right hashtag, you could win one of 100 limited-edition coins. There’s even a golden coin hidden behind door 24 of a special Monopoly advent calendar.
