The ever-growing world of Unmatched is about to welcome another popular video game franchise!
Restoration Games has announced that Slay the Spire will be joining the hit tabletop skirmish system in a brand new expansion, bringing four of the roguelike's iconic playable characters into the arena.
Details are still fairly limited for now, but if you've ever wanted to see the Ironclad square off against Sherlock Holmes or a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, that possibility is getting a little bit closer!
Slay the Spire joins the roster
The upcoming set, titled Unmatched: Slay the Spire, is being created through a collaboration between Restoration Games and Mega Crit, the studio behind the hugely successful deckbuilding roguelike.
The expansion will feature all four of the game's playable heroes:
- Ironclad
- Silent
- Defect
- Watcher
Exactly how each fighter will play hasn't been revealed yet, but fans of both games will already have plenty of ideas about how their signature abilities could translate into Unmatched's tactical combat system.
Given the source material, there's plenty of room for some creative card design!
Another crossover for Unmatched
One of the biggest strengths of Unmatched has always been its wonderfully varied cast of fighters.
Over the years, the system has brought together characters from history, mythology, literature, and pop culture, creating matchups that simply couldn't happen anywhere else.
Recent expansions have added heroes from franchises including The Witcher, Jurassic Park, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, alongside original takes on legendary figures like King Arthur, Medusa, and Robin Hood.
Adding Slay the Spire continues that tradition, introducing another much-loved gaming universe into the mix without changing the core gameplay that fans already enjoy.
What we know so far
For now, Restoration Games hasn't shared many gameplay details.
Aside from confirming the four playable heroes, the publisher hasn't revealed exactly how the characters will work or when players can expect the expansion to arrive...
More Unmatched is on the way
The Slay the Spire set isn't the only release Restoration Games has lined up either.
The publisher has also confirmed Unmatched: Once Upon a Time, currently planned for release in 2027.
That set takes inspiration from classic fairy tales, introducing an eclectic lineup that includes the Big Bad Wolf, Mulan, Snow White, and Pinocchio.
Cooperative adventures continue
Fans of Unmatched Adventures also have something to look forward to.
The cooperative spin-off series is set to receive A Study in Terror next year, adding four new heroes alongside two new villains.
Like previous Unmatched Adventures releases, players will be able to work together against the game's villains or use those same heroes in traditional competitive Unmatched battles.
Another exciting addition
With another fairy tale expansion, a new cooperative release, and now a visit to the Spire on the horizon, it looks like Unmatched fans will have plenty to keep an eye on over the next year or two!
