In almost a month, Disney Lorcana players from all over the world will meet at the Disney Resort in US to compete in the World Championship finals. As previously announced by Ravensburger, this event will not be open to public and only the 28 players that won a Disney Lorcana Challenge or that ranked among the top 8 players from either the EU or the NA Championship will be invited. The event is bound to be a very exciting culmination of the very first season of Disney Lorcana Organized play and I know tons of fans are planning to join virtually the finalists to cheer for them and enjoy some great games. To add to this excitement, Ravensburger decided to spice-up the event by plotting not one but two completely new format for the World Championship.
The First of the two formats will be used during the Swiss rounds of Worlds in the first day and it has been called “SUPER SEALED”. As the name suggests, this format is an evolution of the sealed format in which players receive some Booster packs (usually 6) and build a deck using the cards they pulled from them. In this Super Sealed version, the players will receive 4 booster packs from each of the last 4 sets released before the Worlds (Shimmering Skies, Azurite Sea, Archazia’s Island, and Reign of Jafar) and they have to build a deck using a maximum of three Ink colours.
While sealed events are a common and quite relaxed format when a new set release to allow players to enjoy the new cards before thinking of which deck they may build, this improved version will push players to really think “outside the deck”. Players will need a bit of luck with the pulls considering they will likely have around 32 cards that are Rare of above and they will unlikely have more than 50% of them on three Ink colours only. Budgeting which cards to include in their decks and create a flexible strategy using almost only Common and Uncommon cards feel like a great way to tests the strategic abilities of the Disney Lorcana players competing in Worlds.
Once the fist day over, the Players will than challenge themselves in the “Triple Deck Constructed” format. This format will require the players to create three standard Core Constructed decks using all Six Ink Colour only once. That means that players will need to use their creativity and strategy to create three different 2 Ink Colour combination that will be strong enough to win them the crown of World Champion. To add an even more interesting twist, each player will be able to “bench” one of their opponent’s three decks, meaning each players will only actually use two in the initial rounds. However, the Grand Finals will use a best-of-5-games using all the three Decks players prepared.
These two new formats are surely exciting and I was very pleasantly surprised by the announcement that this year’s World Championship will not be based on the standard Core Constructed. On one hand, these formats will really put some pressure on all the players to find new ways of using their cards to win the games. On the other, we will surely see some interesting games where we can expect some fun and exciting moments, in particular in the first day of the event. Ravensburger has always been working hard to create new and interesting formats to enjoy Disney Lorcana including the exciting Pack Rush they released last year. Although some variants of these formats were created by the community and used in casual or local events, the decision of Ravensburger to make them Official formats in competitive events shows the efforts the team is putting in keeping the game as exciting as possible for everyone. I hope there will be more events using these formats going forward and I would be very pleased to see perhaps the next Challenges designed in a similar way.
