Kaiju fans, it’s finally happening. The King of the Monsters is heading to the tabletop in Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game, an upcoming release from IDW Games. Set to launch on Kickstarter in March 2026, this project brings together three of tabletop gaming’s biggest names – Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe – a trio whose work helped shape Warhammer as we know it.
A Legendary Team-Up
For longtime hobbyists, those names need no introduction. Johnson, Latham, and Thorpe have all had their hands in some of the most influential games to ever hit the table, from Warhammer Fantasy Battle to Age of Sigmar and The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game. Now, they’re turning their combined expertise toward something equally colossal – a game set in the world of Godzilla.
Enter the Kai-Sei Era
Rather than basing the game on the recent Godzilla vs. Kong films, IDW’s RPG draws inspiration from the IDW comic universe, known as the Kai-Sei Era. It’s an apocalyptic setting where the world has been devastated by repeated kaiju attacks. Humanity’s last hope lies with G-Force, a global task force dedicated to defending what’s left of civilisation.
Players will step into the boots of G-Force agents as they investigate disasters, study new energy sources (including the mysterious “Kai-Sei”), and, of course, face down the looming threat of giant monsters. Expect themes of survival, teamwork, and the delicate balance between science and nature – with a few skyscraper-smashing encounters thrown in for good measure.
A Diceless System with a Twist
In a surprising move, Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game will be completely diceless. Instead of rolling dice, players will use a standard deck of 52 playing cards to resolve challenges, representing unpredictability and the chaotic nature of kaiju encounters.
This system sounds like it’ll emphasise collaboration and decision-making over raw luck. Rather than hacking away at monsters with swords or rolling critical hits, players will need to think strategically, coordinate with their team, and adapt to shifting situations – much like a real emergency response squad facing forces of nature.
What to Expect
The game’s campaign page isn’t live yet, but IDW has confirmed that the Kickstarter will feature a core rulebook, character sheets, and everything needed to launch a campaign of city-leveling adventures. The focus seems to be on accessibility and cinematic storytelling – making it approachable for both RPG veterans and newcomers who just want to stomp through Tokyo in style.
There’s no word yet on whether kaiju like Mothra, Rodan, or King Ghidorah will appear in the base game, but given IDW’s long history with the Godzilla license, it’s safe to assume fans will see a few familiar faces.
A New Era of Kaiju Roleplay
With three Warhammer legends behind it and a fresh take on RPG mechanics, Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game could be one of 2026’s most intriguing tabletop releases. Expect more updates as the Kickstarter approaches – and maybe start clearing some space on your shelf. After all, when Godzilla lands, he doesn’t do small.
