Betrayal at the Neibolt House: The evil of Pennywise comes to the tabletop

Halloween deserves a run up. Consider this news article my version of a cartoon character’s legs whizzing around on the spot before they take off at lightning speed. You know, Halloween beats Christmas for us horror fans, and certain horror icons are lurking in the shadows, rubbing their clown-gloved hands in glee at the opportunity to emerge…

This upcoming release grabbed my attention for one reason in particular: Pennywise. He’s been in my life a loooong time. I remember reading It in hardback form and not only did the story find a cave inside my brain in which it could live forever, that beast of a tome also gave my narrow arms a decent workout. And now, its crossover time into the world of board games.

As a quick recap, the base game of Betrayal at House on the Hill is a tile game that allows players to lay out the haunted house room by room, tile by tile, creating a new thrilling game board every time. It’s designed for three to six players – the more the merrier here – each of whom plays one of six possible characters. Secretly, one of the characters betrays the rest of the party, and the innocent members of the party must defeat the traitor in their midst before it’s too late. If this one has passed you by, then the Halloween season is an excellent time to grab a copy and arrange a spooky gaming sesh.

This time round you’re with a group of friends who survived It’s last feeding frenzy in the town of Derry when you were kids. Now, It has stirred again after 27 years, and you’ve been drawn back to the Neibolt House to confront the savage shapeshifter. As you explore the house and experience nightmarish events, will you turn on your friends? Or will you band together to beat It once and for all? The Betrayal at the Neibolt House: The Evil of Pennywise expansion features five terrifying haunts and includes three highly-detailed character figures (Pennywise the Clown, Pennywise the Spider, and Henry Bowers (who, if you’ve read the novel, is definitely the worst of the three), new rooms to explore, new card, tokens, and more.

The timing of this Betrayal expansion couldn’t be better, considering that Welcome To Derry is heading to our TVs at the end of October (I. Can’t. Wait.). You bring the game, I’ll bring the balloons.

About the author:

Steve is currently a freelance board game blogger, but often dreams of life as a pirate, or as a ghost herder in the Lake District, or as an evil estate agent who sells haunted houses for his own dark pleasure. Instead of figuring out how to do these jobs in real life like a normal lunatic, he tries to write about them instead, and releases the resultant books upon the unsuspecting world via famous digital bookstores. More books are bound to follow. Find this peculiar entity here: www.instagram.com/positively.board
