How to play P for Pizza

If you’re looking for a fun, quick fire word game this festive season, then look no further than this easy cheesy letter game – P for Pizza by Big Potato Games.

The aim of the game is to be the first player to collect nine Pizza Cards and build your giant pizza slice. You do this by drawing cards from the centre of the table once you’ve shouted out a correct answer, let me explain;

Set Up

Take the pile of Pizza Cards (around 40 or so) and place them, category side up in the middle of the table. One by one, flip the top three cards and lay them around the deck, pizza side up (showing the letters). When everyone’s ready, discard the Pizza category card on top of the pile to reveal a brand new one, the first round then begins straight away, so you gotta be speedy!

Claim Your Slices

On each card, there are three coloured categories. Green ones are the easiest, yellows a little trickier and reds the most challenging. As soon as the round starts and the category card is revealed, try to think of a word that fits one of the categories that begins with the letter facing it. For example, if the category was flavour of icecream, and the letter facing it was C, you would shout ‘chocolate’.

If you’re the fastest to answer, take the letter card and start building your own pizza slice in front of you. To start the next round, flip over the category card in the centre, replacing the old letter card that was just claimed, and play continues the same.

How To Build Your Pizza Slice

To win, your pizza slice must consist of 9 cards (five cards at the bottom, three in the middle and one on the top).

Be aware of the colours though, the bigger your slice gets, the harder the game becomes. When you start building your middle level, you can only shout out answers from yellow categories, and when building the top level, you can only shout out answers from the red category.

Order Up!

The first player to win 9 cards and successfully build their giant pizza slice, is the winner!

I really enjoy playing P for Pizza as a warm up or filler game. It’s light hearted, easy to grasp and suitable for all ages. The categories are fun too, such as ‘spreads on toast’, ‘has an expiry date’ or ‘you celebrate it’, and the game has great replayability value.

On several occasions, I’ve taken this game away with us, and it’s an easy one to play on the go. Even if you’re not sitting around a table and building your pizza slices, you can just pull the cards out and challenge people on long car journeys, such as – “Jen, name something that doesn’t belong on a Pizza”, the correct answer everyone is pineapple 😀
