Nemesis: Legacy is bringing long-term horror to the tabletop!

A transformer with a dark background and text saying 'NEMESIS' at the top, and 'LEGACY' at the bottom

If you thought surviving a game of Nemesis was stressful enough, Awaken Realms is about to make things even more complicated! Nemesis: Legacy is the latest entry in the sci-fi horror series, but this time there’s a major twist. Rather than throwing players into individual games that start and finish in one sitting, Legacy is designed as a long-form campaign where your decisions can permanently change what happens next. The crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on Gamefound on October 6, giving horror fans plenty to look forward to this autumn.

A new kind of Nemesis

The original Nemesis is already known for combining survival horror with plenty of paranoia. Players have to survive aboard a spaceship packed with terrifying Intruders while dealing with their own objectives and the possibility that their fellow crew members aren't exactly telling the whole story. Nemesis: Legacy takes that foundation and stretches it across an entire campaign. The game is being developed as a fully cooperative experience, with players working together against the threats they encounter. This is a change from the semi-cooperative format that has been a major part of previous Nemesis games. That doesn't mean betrayal has disappeared completely, though. The Infinity Mode will offer standalone missions that can bring back the series' hidden agendas and semi-cooperative gameplay, giving players another way to experience the game outside the main campaign.

Your crew evolves!

One of the biggest additions is the Legacy system itself. Players take control of crew members who can develop throughout the campaign, with their abilities, equipment and other elements changing as the story progresses. The game uses physical Legacy mechanics too, including cards that can be scratched to reveal new information and permanent changes made to components. That means decisions aren't simply forgotten when you pack the game away. The campaign is expected to contain more than 35 hours of story content, with branching missions giving players different paths through the narrative. There are also five different crew classes, allowing players to take on distinct roles during their journey. It should make each campaign feel like its own little disaster movie, except you're the unfortunate idiots trapped inside the spaceship!

Plenty of plastic

If you've played an Awaken Realms game before, you'll probably know what to expect from the miniatures. Nemesis: Legacy is packed with detailed models representing the crew and the terrifying Intruders they'll encounter along the way. New alien enemies will also be introduced, with different forms appearing throughout the campaign. The miniatures aren't locked away from the rest of the Nemesis universe either. The new crew members and Intruders are designed to work with previous Nemesis titles, while the project is also intended to have compatibility with Nemesis: Retaliation. That gives the box a bit more life beyond the campaign itself, particularly for players who already have other Nemesis games sitting on their shelves.

The Legacy legend

There's another reason Nemesis: Legacy has caught the attention of board game fans. Rob Daviau is involved in the game's design. Daviau is one of the biggest names associated with the modern Legacy format, having worked on titles including Risk Legacy and Pandemic Legacy. He's joined by Jaime Barriga, while Nemesis creator Adam Kwapiński remains involved with the game's core rules. The result is a pretty interesting combination. Nemesis already has a reputation for creating unpredictable, cinematic stories through its gameplay, while the Legacy format is built around making those stories carry over from one session to the next. In theory, that should make the consequences of your decisions feel much bigger.

Can you play it again?

Legacy games have always had one obvious problem. What happens when you've finished them? Nemesis: Legacy has an answer in the form of a Recharge Pack. Rather than leaving you with a campaign that can only be completed once, the system is intended to allow the game to be reset so players can experience the campaign again. It's an interesting solution to one of the biggest complaints surrounding traditional Legacy games, especially for something as substantial as Nemesis: Legacy. The exact details surrounding the Recharge Pack are still being revealed, but Awaken Realms has confirmed that replayability is a major part of the game's design.

Coming to Gamefound!

Nemesis: Legacy is scheduled to launch on Gamefound on October 6, 2026. With more than 35 hours of campaign content, branching storylines, evolving characters, permanent decisions, and a collection of new miniatures, this is shaping up to be one seriously ambitious addition to the Nemesis universe. There's still plenty to learn before the campaign launches, but one thing is already clear. Nemesis: Legacy isn't simply another trip into the darkness aboard a spaceship. This time, the darkness remembers what you did!

And that's probably not ideal when the darkness is full of murderous aliens.
