Lucario is getting another shot at the spotlight! A brand-new Mega Lucario Z ex card has been revealed for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, giving fans another version of one of Pokémon’s most recognisable fighters to chase. That might sound a little strange at first. After all, Lucario already has a Mega Evolution, so why does it need another one? Well, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is changing things up with new “Z” Mega forms, and Lucario is one of the Pokémon getting the upgrade.
Now, that new form is making its way onto the tabletop!
A new kind of Lucario!
Mega Lucario Z isn't simply another version of the same old punching machine. The new form puts much more emphasis on Lucario's famous aura abilities. While regular Mega Lucario is more focused on physical attacks, Mega Lucario Z leans into special attacks and incredible speed. That difference is reflected in the TCG too. Mega Lucario Z ex is a Metal-type Pokémon rather than the Fighting-type you'd probably expect from Lucario. Its ability, Aura Seeker, also gives the card a pretty useful trick. It allows players to search their deck for Supporter cards, potentially helping them find exactly what they need to keep their strategy moving.
Another Mega to collect!
The card that's been revealed so far features the standard artwork for Mega Lucario Z ex, but there's a good chance this won't be the only version collectors will be chasing. As a modern Pokémon ex card, Mega Lucario Z ex could receive multiple rarities and alternate artworks when its full set is eventually revealed. That could mean even more versions of Lucario for collectors to hunt down. And let's be honest, Lucario is hardly an obscure Pokémon. It's one of the franchise's biggest stars, so a fancy alternate version could become a very popular chase card!
When can you get it?
There's one slightly annoying problem for anyone already reaching for their wallet: we don't actually know when the card is coming out yet! The Pokémon TCG expansion featuring Mega Lucario Z hasn't been officially announced. The card does carry the set abbreviation “FLO”, which suggests the eventual expansion will begin with the letter F, but that's about as much information as we currently have. With the Pokémon TCG's known 2026 expansions already revealed, Mega Lucario Z ex is currently looking like a card we'll have to wait until 2027 to get our hands on.
That gives collectors plenty of time to start saving, at least!
Lucario's back!
With a completely new Mega form, a different TCG typing and an ability built around finding Supporter cards, Mega Lucario Z ex certainly isn't just a reprint with a new coat of paint. It'll be interesting to see where the card fits into the Pokémon TCG once the full expansion is revealed. For collectors, meanwhile, there's another version of Lucario to add to the ever-growing list of cards to hunt down. Mega Lucario has officially entered its next era, and this time, it's bringing a whole lot more aura with it!
