The classic card game plays out in the form of Super Mario and friends.

“Here we go!”

The rules of Super Mario Uno are pretty much the same as the base game. The usual 0-9 colour cards as well as a suite of bonuses all the same. The one major difference is the star special card which plays like the invincibility of picking up a star on the video game. Used when a player is playing +2 or +4 card on someone, the invincible card repels this bonus and deflects it back to the user. A fun twist for sure.

The objective is simple, get rid of all your cards first. A game for 2-6 players. Deal starting cards and the player to the left of the dealer starts. Reveal the top card of the deck and discard then player 1 commences. The options are play the same value of card, play the same colour or play a special.

Play passes on, if you get down to the last card you must shout Uno or draw more cards as a result of not doing so. Classic rule!

The player without cards left wins the round. There is a further gameplay option where players with cards remaining, check immediately to see what points they have left in hand. There are some scoring rules off the back of this which are cool. They are a good scoring variation.

There are also some bonus cards that really throw the cat among the pigeons here. Most of which are the same as the original Uno, but I’m not running through them today.

It’s-a-me, Mario!

Uno is just one of those all too familiar feel good games that you cannot help enjoy. I love Uno and it is always exciting to bring the deck out for a game. It’s great because it is fast and can be played quickly and in an area where you don’t have much space. Another staple travelling companion for us and we always appreciate a game that can come on the road with us.

The gameplay itself is fast and exciting because there is a huge drive to want to be the player to get rid of your cards first, or better yet, be the player that forces an opponent to draw a fistful of cards. However, not be the player that falls victim to such a play, but that is just the way it goes.

The game plays better with more people. It notes 2-6 players but a two player is not the best as some cards are a little redundant here. At least 3 people is preferable and more people just means more fun with the game play.

Mama Mia

I’m not sure if it is disappointing or not but there is only one subtle rule adjustment for this Mario version of Uno with the star card. I cannot figure out if I expected a bit more variation here or I’m content with this set? It would have been great to see some more Mario variation rules contained within.

Certainly if you already own a set of Uno you are perhaps not gaining much new with this set. However if you are a collector then you would want this one as it looks brilliant. All your favourite Nintendo characters are contained within this set and that alone is worth the purchase. I am a Nintendo fan if you hadn’t guessed.

I know it will be a firm family favourite for us, my kids at 2 and 5 are just not quite there with this one yet which is perhaps something to keep in mind. On holiday around the dinner table, Uno will be on.

Final Thoughts

Super Mario Uno is equal to the original for quality and entertainment. It’s so much fun and always highly competitive, I can highly recommend the set as a fun and simple card game to pick up, particularly for families.
