One of the current most sought after sets in the current iteration of the trading card game, with many desired valuable cards ranging from the Eevee and its evolutions to the hundreds of specially printed Master Ball and Poke Ball rarity cards. With one of the highest estimated pull rates for cards, just over a 1 in 1400 chance to get a specific Special Illustration Rare (1), it has also brought with it a lot of controversy that has been aimed at a number of sources. Some fans like to blame Scalpers for using botsand programmes to access several sites selling the product and buy up all the stock immediately for resale. Many other fans blame The Pokemon Company and Nintendo for not properly preventing this or providing enough product to begin with so that fans, collectors and players of the Pokemon TCG are able to get the products they want. No matter the case, it has been a refreshing learning experience for all parties involved; The Pokemon Company have provided statements that they are working on reprints for2nd and 3rd waves of product throughout the year (2) as well as increasing the production number of products for future sets. Fans and potential buyers are now more aware of the demand for these products currently and have started preparing for the future of the Pokemon TCG with many making pre-orders on sets they wish to collect.

In short, Prismatic Evolutions is a hot set and one that is greatly desired by many people. showing the continued rise in popularity that Pokemon has had even after almost 30 years. With that established, let’s start by looking at the hot items available in the Prismatic Evolutions range and what you should be looking out for when collecting.

Eevees, Eevees as far as the eye can see

The chase cards of the set, and almost every set they appear in, are Eevee and its Eeveelutions as dubbed by Pokemon fans. Specifically, the Special Illustration Rarecards that feature artwork for Eevee and its eight evolutions throughout the games franchise. Although the cards are designed by a different artist each, it is clear they were given similar guidance by the Pokemon Company to feature a Tera Form of the Pokemon in the centre of the card with a background or surrounding foreground to represent the Pokemon type they are associated with. Some of the most impressive of these artworks are the Umbreon EX, with its gothic backdrop that shifts in colour, Sylveon EX, that has an array of ribbons and flower petals, and a personal stand out in Leafeon EX’s card, as it crosses over a branch in a blossoming tree and being possibly one of the only Eeveelutions to fit in with the rest of its background naturally.

Each of the cards are also mechanically unique, with each providing unique methods of attack and abilities that shake up the traditional rules of pokemon. To start, Eevee EXis a unique basic EX Pokemon due to its one ability ‘Rainbow DNA’, this allows for Eevee EX to be treated as if it was a normal Eevee card providing additional copies of Eevee on the bench to help speed up the evolution chances and get out one of the many Eevee EXs available. Amongst the Eeveelutions available to benefit from this ability are pokemon such as Flareon, which comes across as the best direct attacking Pokemon in the roster due to its first attack burning charge; this attack does 130damage to the opponents Pokemon and searches out an additional two basic energy cards to be attached to any of the pokemon on your bench. This attack works well in tandem with many of the other Eeveelutions available as they often have second attacks that require a variety of basic energy cards, Umbreon EX especially requires this aid to search out three separate energy cards to perform its attack Onyx, allowing the user to discard all energy and take one prize card without having to knock out an opponent’s Pokemon.

Is there actually anything that isn’t Eevee in this?

Yes! Many new cards and Illustration Rare cards outside of the Eevees do exist inside of Prismatic Evolutions. Due to most of the cards in the set being reprints of cards from the year prior, many cards that didn’t get illustrations before are now getting them, such as the dazzling looking Dragapult EX which has stirred up the competitive scene, yet never received an artwork in its debut set Twilight Masquerade. Other stand outs of this are the Bloodmoon Ursaluna EX, with a stylistic looking red moon setting, as well as the med sets of cards in a trio of Ancient EX and Future EX Pokemon. The artwork on both are spectacular, with the Ancient EX’s looking like old wall scroll artwork and the Future EX’s having a matt and digital effect to them. And last, but definitely not at thevery least in any way, is the Palafin EX Illustration Rare created by none other than the Fist of the North Star Artist Tetsuo Hara himself.

Amongst these reprints are also a couple new cards mechanically, most of them have not caused too much change to how people play the Pokemon TCG game except for one little sapling. Budew is a new Baby Pokemon that was added to the TCG with this set, a small little Pokemon with just 30 HP to reflect that. But it does come with an attack that requires no energy cost that does 10 damage and stops your opponent from playing Item Cards during their turn. A small effect that has disrupted the entire meta with decks reliant on Rare Candy to skip to their second stage, such as Charizard EX, are now struggling to win without having their own copy of Budew in their decks to slowdown the opponent.

An array of products available with many more to come!

As it stands currently, there are a variety of many products that have been released in relation to Prismatic Evolutions, giving fans as many options as possible to get access to the packs as possible. These include many of the usual suspects; Prismatic Evolutions has many products that fans would be familiar with in the Pokemon TCG, such as Elite Trainer Boxes, Booster Bundles and collection boxes such as the Poster Collection and Binder Collections.

The Elite Trainer box (ETB) is a shimmering white box with rainbow engravings of Eevee surrounded by gemstones, a great box for storage and very standout in a collection compared to other set’s ETBs. The contents of the ETB are made up of a pack of 65 card sleeves with a similarly designed artwork on the backs of them to the ETB cover, gaming counters and coins, 9 packs of Prismatic Evolutions and an adorable looking Eevee Promo card. Even with the high pull rates, getting your hand on this ETB makes up for it simply with the addition of a cute looking Eevee card, detailed with a sleeping Eevee surrounded by play toys. Overall, the ETB is a great all round product for fans to collect, play and hold onto.

Similarly, the Booster Bundle is a stripped down version of this product with none of the additional features and only 6 packs of the Prismatic Evolutions cards. Fortunately it is at a much lesser price than the ETB, so fans looking to get a hold of just the packs and for a fair price, it is a great place to start. Additionally to this, the collection boxes also feature smaller pack sizes for fans that are after fun storage options as seen in the Binder Collection or to keep track of what Eeveelutions they are after.

Will you choose to get Prismatic Evolutions?

In conclusion, the Prismatic Evolutions Pokemon set is as special as many of the other end of year sets that have been released across the years, such as Paldea fates, Crown Zenith and so on. Though they are hard to find, many of the packs are worth it to have a chance at finding some of the biggest fan favourite Pokemon in the whole series, as well as many great new artwork cards of rising Pokemon cards from recent competitions and tournaments around the world. As stated by the Pokemon Company, more reprints are on the way and more Prismatic Evolutions products are being released later in the year giving everyone a fighting chance to find and collect the new hottest set.
