Desserts that give you a buzz
The other new addition with the pack is 6 new desserts, which can all be used in exactly the same way as in the base game.
All but one feature the new coffee cup icon to let you know it’s a caffeinated item, although bizarrely the only one that doesn’t is the coffee cake. This does, in a way, feel like an oversight, but perhaps the creators did not want 4 separate icons on the one card?
Coffee for all
The same clear iconography from the base game is used with regard to detailing what ingredients are present in each time, and also for the characters’ dessert preferences. The new suit is also a bold pink, and its suit icon is a carton of milk. This allows the cards to be clearly distinguishable even if playing with non-English or younger players who may struggle with the flavour text; likewise, for those with colour blindness, this game remains playable.
Final thoughts
It is fair to say that as expansions go, this is a very small one, with only 10 additional cards being added and no new rules to learn. That said, it’s important to consider the price point and the versatility that’s added here.
At a £4.79 price point (on Zatu at the time of writing), you gain an entire new suit and a bit more variation in what cards will come up, which adds to the dilemma of waiting for a customer’s favourite dessert vs just serving now with something less optimal. For me personally, this expansion coming in at around the same cost as an actual coffee, with far more longevity than said beverage, meant this was definitely something that I wanted, and after multiple plays for me at least, it does expand the game enough to be considered value for money despite its size.
