The time has finally come: Zatu has been tasked to reveal their first Disney Lorcana card!!!! Thanks to Emma and Ben from Ravensburger Zatu has been given the opportunity to have a peek to one of the cards from Reign of Jafar, the 7th set of Disney Lorcana: “Megara, Part of her Plan”. I love that we have been given a card from the movie Hercules, considering an “electrifying” new Disney musical based on this movie is coming to London on the 6th of June. This time cannot be more perfect as Reign of Jafar releases in all Hobby Stores on the 30th of May, but it will be available on mass retail on the 6th of June. Coincidences?

I know it is perfect timing for all the fans of Hercules, but let’s have a better look at the new card, starting from the amazing illustration brought to us by Samanta Erdini. I personally think the artwork is true to the original movie, and it perfectly reflects the beauty and determination of this character. I also find the lack of any other characters in this picture to ensure the attention is fully focused on Megara only, and her magnetic gaze. You can almost hear her giving voice to the flavour text on the card “The sooner we get this done, the sooner I’m free… of you”.

In terms of gameplay, the new Megara is a 3-cost Inkable common Amethyst card (54 of 204) with a Strength of 2 and a Willpower of 5. Together with some pretty good stats, Megara also has the ability to gain Challenger +2 to increase her strength to 4, while a Character named Hades is also in play. Megara also has the keywords Dreamborn and Ally similar to “Megara, Pulling the Strings” we saw in the First Chapter. Interestingly, Disney Lorcana already has three other cards based on Megara, although they were all Emerald cards. The new card from set 8 is the first Amethyst card based on this character and I found it interesting that it is designed to interact with Hades and not with Hercules. This difference is quite important, as there are actually 9 cards named Hades in Disney Lorcana, with at least one per each Ink colour, making Megara a very flexible option that can be played in any Ink combination to create some interesting strategies. Without considering the cards from the new set, Megara’s high willpower makes her a perfect target for “Hades, Fast talker” ability that can banish a character with a cost of 3 by dealing 2 damages to her. Alternative, Megara can easily fit in a Amethyst-Sapphire deck (Blurple), considering that “Hades, Infernal Schemer” has been a staple in these type of decks. Blurple decks strategy is usually quite aggressive and can definitely put to good use the good stats of Megara in pauper formats.

Overall, I think Megara is a pretty decent common card that can definitely see some play particularly in pauper formats. Megara’s good stats and the Challenger ability make her quite valuable, especially among the other Amethyst cards. It is true that to exploit this card at its full potential your deck also needs to include Hades, but I can see it to still be quite effective when pulled from your booster packs during any draft events when Reign of Jafar releases. I cannot wait to see if the new set will also include more Hades cards or any more cards from the movie Hercules! In the meantime, make sure you follow all the news about Disney Lorcana on www.disneylorcana.com.
