The worms are back, and they're just as chaotic as ever! Worms: The Board Game – 30th Anniversary Edition has officially launched, giving fans an upgraded way to enjoy one of gaming's most iconic franchises away from the screen. Developed by Mantic Games in partnership with Team17, this special edition celebrates three decades of explosive battles with plenty of new content packed into the box.
Originally funded through a successful crowdfunding campaign, the anniversary edition builds on the original board game with more miniatures, bigger battlefields, extra weapons, and support for larger player counts. If you thought family game night couldn't get any more unpredictable, think again!
The chaos returns!
For over 30 years, Worms has been known for its hilarious turn-based battles, ridiculous weapons, and those moments where everything goes spectacularly wrong. Thankfully, all of that chaos has made the jump to the tabletop.
Players take control of heavily armed worm teams and battle across destructible landscapes packed with hazards, supply crates, and plenty of opportunities for disaster. Every turn requires a little strategy, but don't get too comfortable. A gust of wind, a badly aimed rocket, or an unfortunate explosion can completely change the game in seconds. It's exactly the sort of unpredictable fun that made the video games so memorable!
Bigger battles!
One of the biggest additions in the 30th Anniversary Edition is its expanded player support. The game now accommodates two to six players, thanks to the inclusion of the previously separate fifth and sixth player expansion. That means even bigger firefights, more worms on the battlefield, and far more opportunities for accidental friendly fire.
Games are designed for players aged 10 and over, with most matches lasting around 45 minutes, making it an easy choice for family game nights or casual gaming sessions with friends.
More worms!
A celebration wouldn't feel complete without some impressive miniatures! The original release included sixteen miniatures made from just four repeated poses. This anniversary edition goes much further, featuring 24 unique 3D worm miniatures, each with its own sculpt. It gives every team a little more personality while making the battlefield look even better once everything is set up. For collectors and long-time fans of the series, this is one of the biggest highlights of the new edition.
Bigger maps!
The battlefield itself has also received an upgrade. Instead of four landscape sections, players now get six multi-hex terrain pieces, allowing for larger and more varied maps. More space means more tactical decisions, longer firefights, and plenty of room for unexpected chain reactions. Destructible terrain remains one of the game's standout features, encouraging players to reshape the battlefield with every explosive attack.
Just don't be surprised if your carefully planned hiding spot disappears moments later!
More weapons!
Would it really be Worms without an outrageous collection of weapons?
The anniversary edition introduces even more weapons, utilities, and gameplay cards to keep every match feeling fresh. While fan favourites return, players can expect an even greater variety of ways to ruin their opponents' day. Of course, classic Worms has never been about perfectly balanced military tactics. It's about launching ridiculous attacks and laughing when they don't quite go to plan.
Whether it's an exploding sheep, a mistimed airstrike, or the legendary Holy Hand Grenade, every turn has the potential to become an unforgettable moment.
Plenty of extras!
The upgrades don't stop there. Alongside the new miniatures and larger maps, players will also find 3D plastic flame markers, additional gameplay components, and various new cards that expand the overall experience. Rather than feeling like a simple reprint, this anniversary edition offers a noticeably more complete package than the original retail release. It's a fitting way to celebrate one of gaming's longest-running multiplayer series.
A great way to celebrate!
Video game board game adaptations have become increasingly popular in recent years, but Worms feels like one of the most natural fits. The series has always revolved around tactical decision-making, destructible environments, and plenty of player interaction, all of which translate surprisingly well to the tabletop. Whether you're introducing younger players to the franchise or reliving memories of late-night multiplayer matches, there's plenty to enjoy here.
With upgraded components, expanded multiplayer support, and even more explosive mayhem packed into the box, Worms: The Board Game – 30th Anniversary Edition looks like a fantastic way to celebrate 30 years of one of gaming's most entertaining series.
Just remember one thing. Whatever happens, try not to stand next to the exploding sheep!
