The TCG boom keeps rolling!
If you've spent any time in your local game store recently, you've probably noticed it already. Trading card games are still pulling in huge crowds, exciting new releases are landing almost every month, and players are as eager as ever to crack open booster packs!
Now, Asmodee has added even more weight to the idea that the trading card game craze is here to stay. The tabletop giant says the category remains one of its strongest performers, and the numbers certainly back that up.
A massive part of the business
According to Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler, the company isn't worried about the future of trading card games. While every game will naturally have its highs and lows, the overall market remains incredibly healthy.
That's helped by the fact that Asmodee isn't relying on just one big hit. Instead, it distributes some of the biggest names in the hobby, including the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece Card Game and Magic: The Gathering. Each has its own dedicated community, with players often sticking with their favourite game for years.
The figures tell the story. Trading card games made up an impressive 61% of Asmodee's revenue during its last financial year, while board games accounted for 31%. Even more impressively, trading card game sales climbed another 23.1% during the first quarter of the company's new financial year.
Why booster packs work so well
One of the biggest strengths of trading card games is their unique business model. Booster packs bring an element of surprise every time they're opened. Players might be hunting for powerful cards to improve a deck, while collectors are chasing rare artwork, alternate versions, or valuable pulls. That creates excitement long after a game's initial launch. Instead of buying a single box and calling it a day, many players keep returning whenever a new expansion arrives. Of course, successful TCGs need more than shiny cards. Regular organised play, local tournaments, fresh expansions, and active communities all help keep players engaged year after year.
It's not just Asmodee.
The trend isn't limited to one company either. Hasbro recently reported another strong performance for Magic: The Gathering through its Wizards of the Coast division, with revenue from the game rising by 27%. Both companies have pointed to growing player engagement, suggesting more people are not only buying cards but actually playing them as well.
That balance between collecting and playing has become one of the biggest strengths of the hobby. Some players love building competitive decks, others enjoy casual games with friends, while plenty simply enjoy collecting their favourite characters and artwork.
New games keep arriving!
Asmodee isn't standing still either. Since becoming an independent company in 2025, it has continued expanding its catalogue through acquisitions and new partnerships. One of the latest announcements is a distribution agreement for Bandai's new Naruto Trading Card Game, giving fans of the popular anime another title to keep an eye on.
The company has also continued investing across tabletop gaming as a whole, showing that while trading card games are leading the charge, board games remain a major part of its long term plans.
A great time to be a card gamer!
Whether you're battling with Pokémon, casting spells in Magic: The Gathering, duelling in Yu-Gi-Oh!, or setting sail with One Piece, there's never been more choice for trading card fans. New expansions arrive throughout the year, organised play continues to grow, and fresh games are regularly entering the market. Not every title will become the next global phenomenon, but the category itself shows no signs of fading away.
For players and collectors alike, that's fantastic news. There are plenty more booster packs waiting to be opened!
