This $15M RPG just broke Kickstarter history

Avantris Entertainment has set a new benchmark for tabletop crowdfunding with Neon Odyssey, now officially the highest-funded tabletop roleplaying game Kickstarter of all time. The campaign closed at more than $15.2m (£11.2m) from over 46,000 backers.

That puts it just ahead of the Cosmere RPG, which previously held the record with $15.15m from more than 55,000 backers in 2024.

From Launch to Landmark

The campaign moved quickly from the start. It reached its funding goal within seconds of going live, then passed $3m in its first few hours.

After that, growth stayed steady across the full 30-day run, finishing above $15.2m and setting a new high point for the category.

It also outpaced Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game, which had held a major position in the rankings with $9.53m. The result now places Neon Odyssey at the top of the TTRPG Kickstarter list.

What Backers Funded

Neon Odyssey is a science-fantasy RPG built for Dungeons & Dragons 5.5E. It takes place in a setting called Stardust Rhapsody, which blends space travel, faction politics, and exploration across a wide sci-fi universe.

The project is structured as a 1,400-page trilogy of books. Across those volumes, players get a full campaign setting, starship systems, space combat rules, character options, alien species, faction tools, and mission frameworks built around bounty hunting and exploration.

The design focus leans toward long-form campaigns with a strong sense of scale, moving between worlds and systems rather than staying in a single location.

The Kickstarter campaign also launched with a fully animated trailer and a music video featuring an original track by synthwave group The Midnight, with animation from Knights of the Light Table.

Reaction From the Team

Avantris Entertainment co-founder Mikey Gilder said the response exceeded expectations, describing Neon Odyssey as a long-running creative idea that grew into something much larger once the community got involved.

The project began with a $60,000 funding goal, making the final total a significant step up from its original target.

What Happens Next

Neon Odyssey is currently scheduled for delivery to Kickstarter backers in 2027, with a wider retail release planned afterwards.

It joins a growing list of large-scale tabletop RPG projects using crowdfunding as a primary launch platform, with audiences continuing to respond strongly to expansive settings and high-production campaigns.

A New Top Spot for TTRPG Crowdfunding

With Neon Odyssey now at the top of the rankings, the bar for tabletop RPG Kickstarter campaigns has shifted again.

It also reinforces a clear trend in the space. Bigger settings, larger teams, and more ambitious production values are continuing to draw strong backing, especially when paired with established creators and recognizable creative talent.
