Barbaric is heading to tabletops with a brand-new co-op board game from Vala Foundry and Vault Comics, bringing the comic’s brutal fantasy world into a hack-and-slash dungeon crawler built for one to four players.
The game is based on the hit Barbaric comic series, which is also currently being adapted into a Netflix streaming series.
Co-Op Combat and Hex-Based Battles
Barbaric: The Board Game puts players in control of cursed heroes fighting through waves of enemies across a hex-based map.
Players use action points to trigger abilities, move across the board, and survive increasingly dangerous encounters. Combat runs through a dice-based system called Frenzy, which handles attacks and battle outcomes during fights.
The overall goal is straightforward: survive, defeat the Overlord, and break the curse hanging over the party.
Built Around Fast Fantasy Action
From the early details, the game looks focused on quick-moving combat rather than heavy strategy systems. The sword-and-sorcery setup leans hard into action, enemy waves, and chaotic battles, which fits the tone of the original comic pretty closely.
Session lengths are expected to run around 45 to 60 minutes, making it a more compact co-op experience compared to some larger campaign crawlers currently on the market.
The game is designed for players aged 14 and up.
Crowdfunding Campaign Coming Soon
Barbaric: The Board Game is expected to launch on Gamefound in the near future, although an exact crowdfunding date has not been confirmed yet.
With the Netflix adaptation also in development, the timing makes sense. The series has continued building a following through comics, and the tabletop version looks positioned to tap into that growing audience ahead of the show’s release.
For fans of fantasy co-op games with plenty of combat and a strong comic-book style, this is probably one to keep an eye on.
