Survival horror has always been about one thing. Making every decision matter! Whether you're squeezing the last few bullets out of your handgun or debating if opening that mysterious door is worth the risk, the tension comes from never feeling completely safe.
That feeling can be tough to recreate in a tabletop RPG. Players have so much freedom that horror can disappear if the mechanics don't support it. Thankfully, one upcoming game looks like it understands exactly what makes the genre so memorable.
Ink Ribbon, from Old Oak Games, is a survival horror TTRPG that wears its inspirations proudly. If games like Resident Evil, Alan Wake, and other classic horror adventures are your thing, this is definitely one to watch.
Every bullet matters!
Ink Ribbon takes place in Sparrow's Rest, a city that's already lost the battle against a terrifying force. You're not playing unstoppable heroes here. You're ordinary survivors trying to make it through another day. Resources are incredibly limited. Ammunition is precious. Medical supplies are scarce. Every trip into the city feels dangerous because you never know what you'll find around the next corner.
That constant pressure is exactly what makes survival horror so addictive, and Ink Ribbon seems determined to bring that same feeling to the tabletop. Forget flashy spells or powerful abilities. Staying alive is challenge enough!
Built for tough choices
One of the biggest highlights is how the game approaches risk. Nothing feels completely safe, and that's very much the point. The Quick Start Demo, available through the game's BackerKit campaign, gives players an early look at the core mechanics. From the very beginning, it becomes clear that planning is essential. Do you push deeper into a dangerous building for supplies? Do you save your last few bullets, or use them now before things get even worse? Every decision has consequences, and that's where the tension really kicks in.
It's a gameplay loop that feels incredibly familiar to anyone who's spent hours surviving zombie outbreaks in video games.
Horror done right!
Ink Ribbon also takes inspiration from some fantastic horror tabletop RPGs. Fans of Mothership will recognise that unforgiving approach to survival, where mistakes can quickly spiral into disaster. There's also a hint of Shadowdark in the way the game rewards careful planning instead of reckless heroics. Neither system pulls its punches, and Ink Ribbon seems happy to follow that same philosophy.
That's exactly what many horror fans want. Victory should never feel guaranteed!
More than just zombies
While zombies are the obvious headline attraction, Ink Ribbon isn't limited to one type of horror. The game includes modular rules that let groups completely change the threat facing Sparrow's Rest. If shambling undead aren't your thing, there are some much stranger options waiting.
Fancy fighting clone dinosaurs instead? Surprisingly, that's possible! It gives off serious Turok energy and completely changes the feel of the campaign. Prefer something a little more supernatural? Ghosts and restless spirits can also haunt the city's abandoned streets, turning every exploration into a completely different kind of nightmare.
That flexibility means groups can tailor the horror to whatever scares them most, while still keeping the survival mechanics at the heart of the experience.
One to watch!
There's no shortage of tabletop RPGs, but genuinely great survival horror games are much harder to come by. Ink Ribbon looks like it's taking all the right lessons from classic horror video games while borrowing smart ideas from some of the best modern TTRPGs. Limited resources, meaningful choices, dangerous exploration, and an atmosphere where survival is never guaranteed all come together to create something that feels refreshingly focused.
If you've ever wished Resident Evil could work around a tabletop, Ink Ribbon might be the closest thing yet. Horror fans should definitely keep this one on their radar!
