Clash Royale board game hits crowdfunding goal in under an hour

The upcoming tabletop adaptation of Supercell’s popular mobile strategy game is off to a flying start, with players quick to back the project following its official launch on Kickstarter. Developed by Maestro Media in collaboration with Supercell, Clash Royale: The Grand Arena brings the mobile game’s tower-destroying battles to the tabletop. The campaign launched with an initial funding goal of $25,000, which it surpassed in under 60 minutes. The game is designed for two to four players, with backers able to support the project through a range of pledge tiers. The campaign also offers options that include expansions for those looking to get more out of the experience.

Bringing Clash Royale to the tabletop

The board game aims to capture the strategic decision-making of the original mobile game while making the experience accessible to newcomers. Players build eight-card decks around a chosen Champion and take turns deploying their forces to attack their opponents’ towers. Elixir fuels each move, meaning players must carefully manage their resources while deciding when to strike and how to defend their own territory. Destroying an opponent’s tower earns a crown, with the player who collects the most crowns by the end of the game claiming victory. According to lead designer David Gordon, the development team explored several different approaches before settling on a turn-based card system.

“We tried mechanisms such as actual real time play against a clock, putting out a bunch of cubes, and simultaneous reveals, as well as various strategies to minimize the admin for players,”

Gordon explained. “Ultimately, we found that focusing on elixir spending in a turn-based card play system yielded a fun experience that most resembled that of the video game.”

The design process focused on retaining the tactical choices that make Clash Royale appealing without making the tabletop version unnecessarily complicated. Gordon also emphasised that players should not need prior experience with the mobile game to enjoy the board game. The team wanted strategy fans to be able to pick it up and have fun without needing to understand the franchise's history or characters beforehand.

Following in Clash of Clans' footsteps

This isn't the first time Maestro Media and Supercell have teamed up to bring one of the developer's mobile games to the tabletop. Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid previously launched on Kickstarter and raised more than $500,000 during its crowdfunding campaign, demonstrating the potential audience for physical versions of Supercell's popular franchises. The strong opening for Clash Royale: The Grand Arena suggests that there is plenty of interest in another tabletop adaptation. Whether it can match the success of its predecessor remains to be seen as the campaign continues. With its combination of card-based tactics, resource management and tower warfare, the new game looks to offer a familiar experience for existing Clash Royale players while giving newcomers a way to explore the franchise.

Clash Royale: The Grand Arena is currently available to back on Kickstarter, with the campaign scheduled to run until November.
