I'm struggling to get my head around this celebration that is up and coming. It's mad but equally fantastic that Carcassonne is turning 25 and being celebrated with this anniversary set.
I would definitely consider Carcassonne to be a pioneer of the modern boardgame. It's absolutely a gateway game and was a game that brought me back to games on the table top. I love it.
It was actually the Hunters and Gatherers I was introduced to in 2004 which was an instant hit for me and is still one of my all time favourite games. All other Carcassonnes quickly followed.
What is great to see in 2026 is there is still huge appetite for the game and constantly new versions, updates, themes coming to the games market and I am here for it.
So an anniversary edition is a must and it is coming soon. The game is utilising a Pixel art design to celebrate the occasion. The meeples have been pixilated to match and a special little anniversary expansion, "the pixel fountains" is also in the set. Amazing!
Happy birthday Carcassonne!
