Some video games just feel impossible to recreate on the tabletop. Baba is You has always been one of them! Somehow though, Bitewing Games has pulled it off, bringing the critically acclaimed puzzle game from Hempuli Oy into the world of board gaming.
Following in the footsteps of other successful video game adaptations like Cult of the Lamb, Baba is You: The Board Game is set to launch on Kickstarter this September. Instead of recreating the original experience move for move, the designers have taken the core idea and built something completely new around it!
A puzzle classic
Released in 2019, Baba is You quickly became one of the most inventive puzzle games around. It won multiple awards thanks to its brilliantly simple concept. Rather than solving puzzles by finding keys or flipping switches, you rewrite the rules of the game itself! Every level is filled with word blocks that form sentences like "Flag Is Win", "Wall Is Stop", or "Baba Is You." Push those blocks around, and the entire level changes. Suddenly, walls become the winning objective, rocks become controllable, or lava is completely harmless. It sounds simple on paper, but the puzzles quickly become wonderfully brain-melting. Every solution feels like you've outsmarted the game itself! If you've somehow never played it before, it's well worth checking out. Just don't blame us when you spend an hour staring at one puzzle!
A new direction!
Instead of trying to squeeze a single-player logic game onto cardboard, Bitewing Games has gone in a completely different direction. Baba is You: The Board Game is a competitive two-player strategy game. Honestly? That's a pretty clever move! One player controls Baba while the other takes charge of Keke. At the start of each scenario, there isn't even a winning condition. Players have to manipulate the word tiles to create one for themselves while also stopping their opponent from doing the same.
That's where things get really interesting...
Just like the video game, you'll be moving words around to change how the board works. You can make different objects become the winning objective, strengthen them with Strong, or even send them running away with Scared. The combinations quickly stack up, meaning no two games are likely to play out the same way.
It captures the chaotic creativity of the original while becoming something entirely its own.
Plenty to play
This isn't just a handful of puzzles thrown into a box either. The campaign features seven different worlds, each containing five unique scenarios. Every world introduces fresh ideas and twists, gradually expanding the possibilities without overwhelming players from the very beginning. Each world is expected to take around an hour to complete, making them perfect for an evening of tactical head scratching!
Better still, each world tells its own self-contained story. That means you don't need to commit to playing with the same opponent every session. Simply pick a world, battle it out across five scenarios, and crown the overall winner. Of course, if you're feeling competitive, nothing is stopping you from keeping score across every world to decide the ultimate Baba champion!
Kickstarter incoming!
The Kickstarter campaign launches on 15th September, and there's already plenty of excitement building around it. Early backers can expect exclusive bonus content, although the full details haven't been revealed just yet. Interestingly, the campaign will also feature Party House, a new card game based on the hit title from the indie collection UFO 50. That makes this a particularly exciting launch for fans of indie gaming, with two adaptations arriving in one campaign. Pricing is still under wraps for now, but with Bitewing Games' growing reputation for clever strategy titles, this is certainly one to keep an eye on.
