Arkham Horror: Remastered brings a classic board game back to life

The Arkham Horror box with text saying Remastered

Fantasy Flight Games is bringing back Arkham Horror Second Edition with a remastered release, updating the classic cooperative board game for a new generation of players. Arkham Horror: Remastered will launch through a Gamefound crowdfunding campaign in the coming days, marking the first release in Fantasy Flight Games' new Vault Series. The initiative aims to revive classic titles from the publisher's back catalogue, giving longtime fans another chance to revisit beloved games while introducing them to new audiences. Originally released in 2005, Arkham Horror Second Edition has been out of print for years. Its return offers an opportunity for players to experience the version that helped establish the series as a favourite among fans of cooperative horror board games.

A smoother experience for new and returning players

Arkham Horror: Remastered retains the core gameplay of Second Edition while introducing updated graphic design, clearer card text and streamlined rules. The changes aim to make the experience easier to follow, reducing the need for players to repeatedly consult the rulebook during a game. According to designer Dane Beltrami, the team has clarified many rules through revised wording and visual reminders, helping players understand card effects more easily. One notable adjustment combines the Arkham Encounter Phase and Other World Encounter Phase into a single Encounter Phase. The terror track has also received a clearer visual design, making it easier to identify what happens when particular thresholds are reached. Despite these changes, Fantasy Flight Games is keen to preserve the experience that made the original edition popular. The core gameplay remains intact, with players continuing to work together against supernatural threats in the Lovecraft-inspired world of Arkham. The updated presentation also brings the game closer to the visual style of Arkham Horror: The Card Game, creating a more consistent aesthetic across the wider series.

Exclusive artwork reveals the remastered look

Fantasy Flight Games has also updated the game's artwork, with a new piece revealed exclusively by IGN. The illustration, titled Tulzscha: The Green Flame, features one of the heralds from the Kingsport expansion. Created by artist Peter Polach, the artwork depicts cultists attempting to shield themselves from a threatening green fire, bringing the figures into greater focus while retaining the disturbing imagery associated with Tulzscha. The revised art direction reflects the publisher's efforts to modernise Arkham Horror while preserving its dark atmosphere. The goal is to make the setting feel familiar to returning players without making it inaccessible to newcomers.

Expansions will be available through the campaign

The upcoming Gamefound campaign will offer several ways to purchase Arkham Horror: Remastered. According to Fantasy Flight Games brand ambassador Wesley Mouri, players will be able to choose a bundled pledge containing the base game and all available expansions. Those who prefer to build their collection gradually will also be able to select the base game and purchase individual expansions as add-ons. However, the remastered release will not be compatible with the original Second Edition. Beltrami explained that the updated graphic design and streamlined card text mean the two versions cannot be combined. This is an important consideration for existing owners hoping to use the new release to complete older collections. While the remaster will make the game and its expansions available again, players will need to keep the two versions separate.

A new chapter for a much-loved series

Arkham Horror has developed into a substantial range of tabletop games, including Arkham Horror: The Card Game, Eldritch Horror and Mansions of Madness. The return of Second Edition gives fans another opportunity to explore the version that helped shape the series. Fantasy Flight Games hopes the remaster will reintroduce the original ruleset to both longtime fans and players discovering it for the first time. With clearer rules and refreshed artwork, the publisher is looking to preserve the game's identity while making it more approachable for modern audiences. For fans who remember investigating Arkham's streets, closing interdimensional gates and confronting cosmic horrors, the remastered edition offers a chance to return. For newcomers, it could be an ideal opportunity to discover one of the most recognisable names in cooperative horror gaming.
