Against the Storm is building a board game!

The against the storm board game cover

The popular roguelite city builder is heading to the tabletop with a co-operative adaptation from Mindclash Games. If you’ve ever wanted to take the settlement-building chaos of Against the Storm away from your PC and onto the dining table, you’re in luck! Hooded Horse and Eremite Games have announced Against the Storm: The Board Game, an officially licensed tabletop adaptation being developed by Mindclash Games. The new game will bring the video game’s mix of city building, resource management, and survival to the tabletop for 1 to 4 players.  The crowdfunding campaign is currently planned for May 2027 through Gamefound, so there’s still a fair bit of waiting to do before players can get their hands on it. The Gamefound page is already live, though, giving fans a first look at what Mindclash has planned.

Build, explore, survive!

Against the Storm: The Board Game is being designed as a fully co-operative, heavy Euro-style game. Players will work together to establish settlements on the edge of civilisation, managing workers and resources while exploring a dangerous wilderness. The Blightstorm is never far away either, meaning your settlement will have plenty of problems to deal with before anyone gets too comfortable.  The adaptation is built around worker placement, resource management, exploration, drafting, and city building. Rather than simply recreating the video game on cardboard, Mindclash is taking inspiration from its roguelike structure, with variable setups designed to make each game play out differently. That means you’ll need to adapt your plans as the settlement develops. The resources available, the decisions you make, and the combination of species you bring together can all change how you approach a game. Basically, there’s no guaranteed route to victory. You’ll have to make the best of whatever the game throws at you!

Seven species

One of the biggest parts of Against the Storm is its collection of different species, and the board game is bringing all seven into the tabletop version. Players will be able to lead Humans, Beavers, Lizards, Harpies, Foxes, Frogs, and Bats. Each species has its own strengths, needs and scoring conditions, giving players different ways to contribute to the settlement.  The combination of species is also intended to affect how each settlement operates. That should encourage players to specialise, cooperate and work around the particular strengths and weaknesses of their population. It’s a natural fit for a co-operative board game. One player might focus on getting the resources needed for production, while another works towards exploration or another objective. Keeping everything ticking over could become a balancing act pretty quickly!

A roguelike board game

Replayability is another major focus. The game will feature variable setups and meaningful drafting decisions, with its roguelike inspiration carrying over from the original video game. Every settlement can therefore present a different collection of challenges and opportunities.  There will also be a campaign mode with persistent progression. Across multiple runs, players will gradually uncover more about the mysterious Blightstorm and work towards finding a way to stop it permanently. For anyone familiar with the video game, that should sound pretty familiar. Against the Storm is built around establishing settlements, completing objectives, and moving on to new locations rather than simply spending hours developing one city forever. If things go badly, the settlement can fall, but the wider game continues. That structure looks particularly well suited to a tabletop campaign.

Coming in 2027!

There’s still a while to go before Against the Storm: The Board Game reaches crowdfunding. The Gamefound campaign is scheduled to launch in May 2027, with the project currently in its preview stage. Fans can already follow the campaign page for future updates as development continues.  There’s plenty more to learn before the campaign begins, too. Mindclash Games has yet to reveal the full contents of the game, final rules and all of its crowdfunding details, so expect more information to appear as development progresses. For now, Against the Storm: The Board Game looks set to turn one of gaming’s most unpredictable city builders into a hefty co-operative Euro. Gather some friends, prepare your workers, and keep an eye on the sky, because that Blightstorm isn’t going anywhere!
