Wildscape preview

Wildscape logo and mountain background

We all know, as gamers we sit around a table sharing the experience together. And it is this circular experience that provides a centre for conversation, strategy and fun. And it is this completeness the brand-new title, Wildscape, is offering. Taking the roundel as a shared action selection center, each action chosen by players moves others and depletes the shared energy, increasing and decreasing certain actions for others.

Wildscape recently built up the following by being the number one game on the BGG Hotness page. For all the games available this one stood out. It is easy to see why with pleasing production with pastel hues, the integration of great mechanisms from other animal themed games like Ark Nova and Cascadia.

What is it?

Taking elements of tile laying, you’ll be creating stackable landscapes. From rivers to deserts, you’ll be trying to squeeze as much as you can from your wild habitats. Wildscape is all about reintroducing animals to the habitats they come from. Animals on the brink of extinction can thrive in the new worlds you create. Like many other engine builders each type of animal has different abilities and powers for you to utilize across the game. As you compete against other players, you’ll be fighting for 40 different specialist cards with both immediate and ongoing rewards. You’ll also have your own end game scoring cards hidden from the other players that will score you points once the game concludes.

Outside of the mechanics of the game there are custom terrain tiles, screen printed meeples and organisation to rival Galactic Cruise. All the cardboard tiles included have been finshed with a plush linen feel, including those soon to be well handled habitat tiles. The game boasts over 300 card pieces, 130 cards and over 30 screen printed meeples in primate and predator shapes. The games mascot and cover art the African Gazelle, has also been lovingly created in wood.

Is it for You?

For lovers of heavy games and other wildlife themed titles, this game from Karma offers something new. Designers Juma Al-JouJou of Clans of Caledonia fame is one of the key driving forces around the calmer for this game. Taking well-loved elements and implementing a new interactive action system the game blends tile placement, action-strength, worker placement style mechanics and tableau drafting. Plus, the use of engine systems with the different animal types is a key draw. You can expect individual and different rewards for each animal and specialist making each game feeling new and fresh.

Of course, the roundel driven by the players around the table is one of the main aims of this game, and further bolsters the theming of working to improve the world one herbivore, primate and even predator at a time. This game is for those fans of medium to heavy games with and advertised time of 30 minutes per player. The rules will be meaty to begin with, but the flow of the game looks to come naturally once all the symbolism and iconography is learned.

So populate the world and welcome the animals home with the brand-new game Wildscape is sure to be a popular one this year.
