We live in an increasingly digital world. Films, TV, games, news and hobby media and even a lot of social contact, all happens more and more online, even board games have made their way online with Board Game Arena, or the numerous app versions of our tabletop favourites.
All that said though, this hobby is still very much a physical world activity. Nothing beats sitting around a table with friends and family, or even just playing solo, launching dice across a table (or far more controlled into a dice tray), moving miniatures or meeples, collecting tokens and holding cards in your hands.
So, it only makes sense we have a magazine that captures the hobby at its best… physical, something you can hold and something you want sitting on your shelf for years to come. Enter Senet Magazine!
A magazine for hobbyists by hobbyists
Launching in 2020, yes that year, this magazine has seen 20 issues filled with hobby goodness for fans of tabletop gaming. It filled with articles on publishers, artists, designers, upcoming games, reviews, mechanics and histories behind some your favourite games, and all carefully curated and formatted to make every page worth turning.
Each edition is also filled with original artwork. From the covers to pages inside the magazine, Senet prides itself on providing a magazine that looks and feels like real love and care has been taken on every page; there are even some incredible fold-out pages with fantastic art in some editions.
The passions seeps into the quality
You can tell the team behind Senet Magazine care about the subject matter, because they have packaged it in to a very quality print publication. There are no online news articles you can read here!
The magazine is compact and printed on really good quality paper. It just feels nice to hold. And because they want this to be a magazine for collectors, you can still order back issues you may have missed from the directly.
It does come with at a price though. At £9.00 an issue, some may be put off by the price. But it really is worth it for the hobbyist in you, you are paying for quality here. Articles are well written, artwork is awesome, variety of games covered recognises the hobby is varied and exciting to explore, and even when you may not be interested in a particular game or series, the designer or artist articles are still real page turners. Often in magazines I find myself skipping articles, with Senet I do not.
It is also worth noting that this is only a quarterly publication also, which means you have plenty of time to read each publication, enjoy it to its fullest, without worrying the next one is coming
crashing through the door soon. It also means you are still only looking at around £27.00 a year (you can subscribe also to never miss an issue), which is easily on par with other magazines that are perhaps more mass market and less a passion publication.
Final thoughts
If you hadn’t guessed it already, this is a magazine I can highly recommend. I got my first copies from the UK Games Expo in 2024 and subscribed very quickly after. I have also purchased back issues and will probably do so again. This magazine looks and feels great but is not just surface deep. It is filled with fascinating articles, I have particularly enjoyed the interviews with designers, and gorgeous artwork that makes every page turn worth every penny I pay for it.
I have tried other magazines, but I have not found any other magazine that feels like the editor and the journalists involved treat it any more than it is their job (not saying they are bad magazines, just typical off the shelf at your local news agent type publications that you can also find their articles free online to read anyway), unlike with Senet, where you can tell this is something they are truly passionate about.
This is my go-to for tabletop games now and with the completion of each magazine I will await the next in anticipation. I truly hope this magazine can continue to serve the hobby community for many years to come.
