Lord of the Rings tabletop games are entering a new era

The Lord of the Rings tabletop gaming landscape has shifted significantly after the IP license moved from Middle-earth Enterprises to French publisher Asmodee late last year. The company is already well known in the hobby space, with a portfolio that includes major licensed properties like Marvel and Star Wars, as well as popular modern classics such as Catan and Ticket to Ride.

The transition initially raised questions within the board game community about whether fewer publishers would be allowed to work with the Middle-earth licence. However, Asmodee has since addressed these concerns by confirming partnerships with multiple external publishers, suggesting that new games set in Tolkien’s world will continue to arrive from a variety of studios.

More publishers joining Middle-earth

According to Asmodee’s recent updates, several external partners will be involved in developing new Lord of the Rings tabletop titles. Among them are Stone Blade Entertainment, Play to Z, and Grand Gamers Guild, each expected to contribute new entries set in the franchise.

One confirmed project is a Lord of the Rings version of Ascension, developed by Stone Blade Entertainment. This follows a growing pattern of adapting existing games into Middle-earth themed versions rather than building entirely new systems from scratch.

Familiar designs with a Tolkien twist

Asmodee has already begun establishing this approach. Recent announcements include Duel for Middle-earth, a reimagined version of 7 Wonders Duel, as well as The Lord of the Rings: The King’s Gambit, a reworked take on Star Wars: The Queen’s Gambit.

Taken together, these releases suggest a strategy focused heavily on re-theming proven game designs within Tolkien’s world. While this approach ensures recognisable gameplay foundations, it has also raised questions about how much original design will appear in future releases.

Accessories and expanded products

Beyond board games themselves, Asmodee is also expanding into licensed accessories through partnerships with companies such as Sirius Dice and Game Toppers.

Game Toppers has confirmed plans to produce Lord of the Rings themed tables and gaming mats, adding a physical tabletop layer to the growing range of products.

Sirius Dice has also joined the licensing programme, although details of its upcoming releases remain limited. The company previously offered mystery-style dice bundles for other licensed properties, which has led to some discussion among fans about what form these Middle-earth products might take.

A mixed reaction from fans

On paper, the expansion of the Lord of the Rings licence across multiple publishers should be good news for board gamers. More games, more variety, and more ways to explore Middle-earth at the table.

However, there is also some caution around the direction the line may take. The current slate of announcements leans heavily on reimagined versions of existing games, which has led to questions about how many truly original designs will emerge under this new structure.

What happens next

At this stage, Asmodee’s strategy appears to be focused on building a broad catalogue of Middle-earth themed products across multiple formats and publishers. Whether this evolves into more original tabletop designs or continues to prioritise familiar systems with a Tolkien twist remains to be seen.

For now, it is clear that Lord of the Rings remains a major priority in the tabletop space, with plenty more announcements likely to follow as these partnerships develop.
