Dragon Quest is getting its own game of Life!

Fancy becoming a legendary hero without spending 80 hours grinding for XP? Dragon Quest is getting its very own version of The Game of Life, bringing the iconic RPG series to the tabletop! Takara Tomy has announced Dragon Quest: The Game of Life, launching in Japan on October 24, 2026, as part of the celebrations for Dragon Quest's 40th anniversary. Pre-orders are already available through Takara Tomy Mall, with the game combining the familiar Game of Life format with plenty of classic Dragon Quest features.

Become the hero!

In Dragon Quest: The Game of Life, players take on the role of adventurers travelling across the board, picking up companions, collecting gold and building their party along the way. The ultimate goal? Defeat the Great Demon King Zoma and become the Legendary Hero! Rather than the traditional cars from The Game of Life, players travel around in Dragon Quest-inspired carriages. As new companions join your party, you'll add coloured companion pins to your carriage, with each colour representing a different job class.

Pick your class!

There are seven job classes to discover:

  • Adventurer
  • Hero
  • Wise One
  • Warrior
  • Priest
  • Wizard
  • Rogue

But choosing a class isn't necessarily the end of your adventure. Under certain conditions, players can change their class during the game, including upgrading to powerful roles such as Sage or Hero. One of the standout locations is the Darma Shrine, a familiar Dragon Quest location where players can change their class. It's a neat way of bringing one of the RPG series' most recognisable mechanics into a board game!

Slimes, medals and monsters!

The Dragon Quest theme doesn't stop at the character classes. The board is packed with references to the games, with players encountering familiar monsters such as Slimes, discovering items and collecting Small Medals. Small Medals can be exchanged for useful items, adding another reason to keep an eye out for them as you travel around the board. There's also the chance to pick up iconic treasures such as the World Tree's Tear. Eventually, all roads lead to Zoma, where players face a final roulette battle to decide who has what it takes to become the Legendary Hero!

A Dragon Quest adventure!

Dragon Quest: The Game of Life looks set to be a fun crossover between a classic family board game and one of gaming's most recognisable RPG franchises. With classes to choose from, companions to collect, familiar monsters and plenty of Dragon Quest references, there's a lot going on beyond simply moving around the board!

With Dragon Quest celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026, this could be a fitting way to bring the legendary series to the tabletop. Now, where's that Slime pin?
