Set ablaze the battlefield with the eviscerating Phantasmal Flames

Pokemon continues to introduce more Mega Pokemon into the modern card game with its latest set, Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution, Phantasmal Flames. This set is inspired by the Inferno X set that came out, showing off the power of Mega Charizard X ex with many more pokemon to support the Fire Dragon Type. This set also features several Dark type pokemon in it that really expands upon the Pokemon type in the card game, releasing Trainer cards that will likely optimise the playstyles of many decks. With a nice mix of Pokemon and Trainer cards, let’s dive into the set list and products available follow on or improve upon the precious sets.

“The Charizard Set”

Similarly to the Scarlet & Violet era of cards, the second mainline set to release for Pokemon centres its theming around a special type of Charizard that is likely to become a part of the meta in the card game. Charizard ex has been a feature of the TCG since its release, being a staple at tournaments and featuring in many of the top 100 decks in play. The Mega form of Charizard comes in two forms differentiated by the indication of either the letter X or Y, with Mega Charizard X being the first of the two to be released. Mega Charizard X ex, a mouthful of a card name, firmly establishes itself to be quite powerful in the TCG with its unique attack that does 70 damage for each discarded basic fire energy card. For Pokemon fans that are upset that Mega Charizard Y doesn’t show up in the set, it has been recently unveiled that Mega Charizard Y will come out in Japan soon as part of the set Mega Dream ex and worldwide sometime early next year.

Many support cards are released alongside this to help speed up the pokemon’s setup. As per tradition, Charizard comes along with a new bird-like pokemon from the game to provide help in Oricorio ex. Oricorio’s ability allows for players to attach as many fire energy cards in hand to benched Pokemon, with the caveat that this ability only works as long as a Fire Type Mega Pokemon ex is in play. On the Trainer card side, Blowtorch and Firebreather provide versatility that can be utilised by all Fire Type decks going forward. Blowtorch being able to remove one of your opponents Special Energy, Pokemon Tool or a Stadium currently in play at the cost of a single Basic Fire Energy Card. Firebreather is less versatile in decks, but is a great way to search out up to 7 Basic Fire Energy cards from your deck, paired with Oricorio Ex this will make it much easier to get those big damage swings with Mega Charizard X ex on your turns.

Now let’s see what other phantoms are hiding away in the shadows

As previously stated, this set comprises the Japanese release of Inferno X and the worldwide release Battle Decks featuring Mega Gengar and Mega Diancie, which includes all of the cards in both of those deck lists. To briefly be negative about this set, it is upsetting to see that many of the cards in this set are not exclusive which does make the set even smaller in comparison to other mainline sets released prior. But, glass half full, this does make getting many of the desired cards in this set easier to obtain and have a prebuilt deck themed around either your own favourite pokemon or one that you want to play with, taking out the time it would take to find the cards and put them into a playable deck list.

Coming back to Phantasmal Flames, there are many good cards in this set that will definitely shake up the format across the next few months of play. The most notable Pokemon added in this set is Toxtricity with an ability that directly takes out Basic Dark energy from the deck and attaches it to any benched dark pokemon, at the cost of a couple damage counters. Considering how cards like Monkidori utilise the movement of Damage Counters around the board and the inclusion of Mega Sharpedo in this set, which is able to do more damage to an opponents active pokemon if Sharpedo already has damage counters on it, It sounds like the perfect setup for a new Dark Type meta in the card game. Outside of this, we see the Mega Diancie sparkle onto the stage with an attack that is able to do anywhere from 120 damage to 240 to any of your opponents pokemon after discarding energy. Though you have to use the energy required to make the attack, Wonder Patch can attach discarded Basic Psychic Energy from the discard back onto any of your Psychic Type pokemon in play. I personally can see this working really well with the Pokemon Tool Powerglass, allowing for you to attach energy in the discard pile back onto the active pokemon at the end of each turn and making it easier to keep Mega Diancie able to fight on.

But what treasures hide away in the Poke-Dragon’s Hoard!

Like always, Pokemon delivers with many great Illustration Rare cards in the set for collectors to chase after with every pack opening. Like Mega Evolutions, we see more Full Art Trainer cards be added into the TCG; from new cards such as the Battle Cage Stadium and a classic variant of Switch the Item Card. Many Illustration Rare cards come out as well with a couple of the most sought after cards in this set are the Piplup, sitting in a snowy plain with a couple yellow flowers scattered around it, a Toxtricity, wandering around dark graffitied streets, and a Paldean Wooper, representing Paldea as it waddles over to the nearest Pokemon Centre. As expected, Full Art Pokemon cards are released alongside the ex range of Pokemon, with Mega Pokemon ex featuring their standard forms in the background similar to a shadow. Though I feel that it was a missed opportunity to not feature a Full Art variant of Mega Gengar ex which would look great with an astral Gengar floating in the background, surrounding Mega Gengar.

But the prized card that all are after, searching pack after pack to find the one and only Mega Hyper Rare Charizard card! Like finding the golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, this one card is sought after by all collectors big and small as it is likely to become the biggest out of the entire Mega Evolutions block once sets have concluded with release. It is similar in design to the Mega Hyper Rare Lucario and Gardevoir that were released in the previous set, featuring distinct etchings and patterns making it appear as if it was a plaque for display as the centre of someone’s prized collection.

Phantasmal Flames is definitely going to be a sought after set for many years to come, with thousands of fans hoping that the Pokemon Company reprints this set alone to give everyone a chance at finding the many beautiful Illustration Rare cards and the gilded golden Charizard X. Even with this set feeling slimmer to previous sets that have been released, it is still a fun addition to the game that is likely to see reprints of its most relevant cards later in 2026. Overall, I highly recommend anyone who is interested in the set to try and get their hands on it and to have a go at building their own decks from the Pokemon found inside.
