If you're here after tending shops and building up the town in Flamecraft, you're in for a treat with Flamecraft Duals Deluxe, a fast-paced two-player pattern-matching puzzle!
Main Essence
Whether you're a longtime Flamecrafter or brand new to the series, the rules are different so you don't need any prior experience from the main game to jump right into Duals.
In the realm of Flamecraft, Artisan Dragons are the core characters that fire specialized flames to help craft goods and activate abilities. This concept carries over in Flamecraft Duals, but instead of traveling from shop to shop, dragons are drawn and stacked on a shared board to match the pattern of various Shop cards.
Each Shop card requires three goods that players need to match on the board in order to score. Most Shop cards have a straight-line pattern, while others are in a triangular pattern. Reputation points are based on how many goods are matched: two-of-a-kind is worth 2 points, and three-of-a-kind is worth 3, regardless of the pattern's shape. The player who accumulates the most Shop value wins the game.
Rules & Modes
The game board for the Deluxe version of Flamecraft Duals is integrated into the box. The box is secured with a fancy dragon clasp hook and unfolds to double as the game board, ready to play. It comes with 6 metal dragon coins, a 3D-printed Fountain miniature, and 2 card holders. The cards, dragon tokens, and token bag are similar to those of the Standard version:
There are 36 Artisan Dragon tokens and 6 Dual Dragon tokens. These Dual Dragons have two Artisan abilities, but players must choose only one of the special abilities to fire. Tokens are pulled from the bag and can be placed anywhere on the board, either on an empty hex space or on top of an existing token. However, no more than 3 tokens are allowed per stack, and only the abilities and goods of the top Artisan Dragon are in effect.
Apart from the 42 Shop cards, the game comes with Fancy Mode, where you have 8 Fancy Dragons to elevate the gameplay with new actions. And then there's Fountain Mode, where 6 Fountain cards add a layer of challenge to the pattern-matching, granting 4 Reputation points to the player who completes each good's first four-of-a-kind. The Fountain miniature blocks a hex space and moves to a new location every time a player completes a Fountain card.
For advanced players, both Fancy and Fountain modes can be combined. But don't fret if you don't have anyone to play with, because Flamecraft Duals also offers a Solo Mode!
Setup & Gameplay
Setup is quick: 6 Artisan Dragon tokens, one of each colour, placed on the starting hexes marked with dragon icons. Six matching tokens are pulled aside as a reserve: only used if the bag runs dry after the end game has triggered but a dragon's ability requires the player to draw. The rest of the tokens get mixed into the bag, ready for drafting. And then there's Buddy, a Fancy Dragon with its own token that only enters play when Fancy Mode is in use. Keep an eye out for it: Buddy has no fire-up ability of its own, but it's a wild token when scoring, standing in for any one good on a Shop or Fountain card.
Shuffle the Shop cards and deal 2 to each player, keeping them hidden from your opponent's view with the card holder. Running Fountain Mode? Lay the 6 Fountain cards face up nearby and set the Fountain miniature on the centre space. Playing with Fancy Mode? Each player picks a Fancy Dragon and places it by the board where both players can benefit from the Fancy Dragons’ abilities. Finish setup by giving each player 3 coins and a reference card. To settle who goes first, both players draw a token from the bag; whoever's dragon sits higher on the Fire Up Chart takes the first turn.
From there, every turn moves through three tight phases: PLAY, SCORE, REFRESH.
- PLAY: Pull a dragon token blind from the bag, drop it on an empty hex or stack it onto an existing one, then fire it up if you like.
- SCORE: Both players check their hand against the board. Did the tokens match up to complete a Shop card? Don't forget, the flex of Dual Dragons counts as either of their two goods types, and you can score more than one card during this phase (the cards must already be in your hand or match an available Fountain card).
- REFRESH: Top your hand back up to 2 Shop cards (or 3 if you hire Trinity the Fancy Dragon!). Skip if your hand is already full but if you feel stuck with your current hand, spend a coin at any point during your turn to draw 2 extra cards, then pick 2 to keep (max 3 cards with Trinity in play), sending the rest to the bottom of the deck. Quick note: Every coin you haven't spent by the end of the game is worth 1 Reputation point, so spend wisely!
The moment the last Artisan Dragon token or Shop card is drawn, the end game is triggered. If your opponent triggers it, they continue until their turn is finished, and you get one last shot to score the cards in your hand, or spend a coin to draw Shop cards you might be able to score, before final scoring commences.
The player with the most Reputation wins; ties go to whoever completed more cards. Still tied? Then you both share a DUAL victory!
Combinations & Replayability
The combination of tile-placement is endless, from how the blind draw from the bag pan out, to which Shop card conditions are in play, to which Artisan or Fancy abilities happen to be active. Each gameplay stacks up differently from the ones before.
The modular nature of the modes adds even more mileage. Bring in Fountain Mode and suddenly the board has a built-in race element, since each Fountain card can only be claimed once. Meanwhile, the shared Fancy Dragons' abilities open up a slightly different experience each session. Combine the two for a heavier, more layered puzzle, and you've got a game that scales its challenge depending on how much chaos you're in the mood for.
The core loop may be simple on its own, but these modes layer in just enough extra challenge to keep pulling you back for another round, all without losing the game's easygoing charm. It's genuinely great to see how the realm of Flamecraft expands into a different style of gameplay while still feeling unmistakably familiar.
Although, I do find the Solo Mode way more challenging and stricter than the 2-player mode. For one, you can't combine it with Fancy Mode, but you must play with Fountain Mode. Each turn, you have to complete at least one card. If you can't, you may spend a coin to take another turn instead. If you still can't complete a card after that, you lose. I've restarted Solo Mode more times than I can count because I couldn't proceed without completing a card, and I get genuinely annoyed every time I'm forced to spend a coin. To win Solo Mode, all 6 Fountain cards need to be completed before the dragon tokens or Shop cards run out.
Final Thoughts
Flamecraft Duals has a much more laid-back strategy vibe, and its compact size fits comfortably on a smaller table. Because it's easy to teach, it's a great pick for a lighter game night or a quick two-player session. Plus, the vibrant and chunky Artisan Dragon tokens are so satisfyingly tactile that you might forget you're playing a strategy game at all.
So is the Deluxe edition worth the upgrade?
If you're looking for an elevated table presence, then yes! In addition to the metal coins and the 3D Fountain mini, the box-turned-board design pushes the visual experience well beyond the Standard edition, making Flamecraft Duals Deluxe feel like a premium keepsake. The standard edition still delivers the same fast-paced gameplay without missing a beat, and the Deluxe edition is simply a treat worth indulging in.
