Ever wondered what actually happens behind that famous Jeopardy! game board? One long-serving crew member has finally given fans a peek behind the curtain! Long-time game board operator Michele Lee Hampton recently sat down with host Ken Jennings to explain exactly what goes into running one of television's most recognisable game boards. And considering she's been part of Jeopardy! for an incredible 38 years, she's got plenty of stories to tell!
From machines to modern tech
Hampton has worked on Jeopardy! since 1987, spending the last 32 years operating the game board. These days, she uses a computer system that mirrors the board seen by contestants in the studio and viewers at home. That might sound straightforward, but keeping up with contestants who know their trivia inside out is no small job! Her role has changed dramatically since she first started. Back in 1987, Hampton worked with a machine called the Still Store. During Final Jeopardy!, she would even use a physical lever to clear the contestants' answers.

Keeping up with contestants
Jennings also asked Hampton about one of the trickier parts of her job: keeping track of what contestants might do next. During rehearsal games, Hampton gets a chance to see the contestants in action. She can pick up on their interests and get an idea of which categories might catch their attention. However, once the real game begins, she has to clear her mind and focus entirely on the action. With contestants buzzing in at speed and the board constantly changing, there isn't much room for hesitation!
A piece of Jeopardy history
Hampton isn't just a crew member. She's become a living piece of Jeopardy! history.
Her office features photographs of former Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune colleagues, reflecting her decades working across both shows. Jennings even recalled how former host Alex Trebek used to describe himself and Hampton as Fred and Ginger, highlighting the close teamwork involved in keeping the show running smoothly. It's a brilliant reminder that game shows aren't just about the people sitting behind the podiums.
