Nurgle’s Rotters (Blood Bowl)

This month I’m continuing to work through my Blood Bowl backlog with Nurgle’s Rotters (plus the rotspawn). I theoretically play Nurgle in both 40k and AoS, insofar as I have large armies which sit on boxes, so it’s nice to have some that might get to the table a bit more often. It’s a good set with a fair bit of variation in heads and poses, though I still did a few arm swaps etc – plus greenstuff tentacles and oozings are always de rigeur for any Nurgle build. In addition, you only get 2 pestigor bodies, but a couple of easy build AoS Orruks are a good substitute (again, with a bit of gs to gap fill).

For the skin, I started with Vallejo Yellow Olive over a Colour Forge grey prime, then moved up to VJ Dead Flesh, drybrushed gently with VJ Livery Green, and washed with VJ Green-Black Ink, which is very versatile stuff indeed. Pustules were picked out with GW Averland Sunset and then hit with VJ Yellow Gold, before being washed heavily with VJ yellow ink, which I allowed to run and pool in a puslike way. Eww.

Cloth was very simple, just VJ imperial purple, wet blended with deck tan for highlights, then washed with GW Earthshade.

Now, all the leather, bone and metal started Army Painter Speed Paint Dark Wood. The leathers were then painted in with VJ Earth, highlighted with Leather brown and washed Seraphim, the bone painted with VJ bone and highlighted with Deck Tan. The metals are more complex, but a brown base is, I find, always best for corroded metal. For the Verdigris, I used VJ Turquoise, heavily drybrushed Brassy Brass, then saturated with GW Nihilakh Oxide before a light, erratic Brass drybrush. For the Rust, it’s VJ Flame Orange all over, washed Sepia, drybrush chainmail, washed Earthshade, and then Flame Orange again into the recesses while the wash is still damp.

Papa bless!

Ewww, they look positively disgusting, I love them! Keep on ploughing through that backlog Sam, Blood Bowl is a fantastic game.

Necron Doom Scythe (40k)

Today is an interesting lesson. I spent so much time thinking about what can be done, I didn’t think whether it should be done. Quick history, I used to collect Necrons. There, told you it was quick. Sold most of them but kept some key pieces, mostly vehicles, for display. Over time I kept looking at them and thinking, maybe I could collect them again one day. But if I did I’d want a new colour scheme. So…maybe I should test it out on one of the models I still have.

This is what CAN be done. You can paint over existing models without stripping them. So long as you haven’t gone too heavy on the paint, a light spray over your existing scheme will give you enough of a base to repaint. A 3rd time and you’re looking to start to lose details, and a 4th is not going to look good at all. So I spray it white and start painting. I painted half the model in another colour and changed my mind, ugh, and I hate painting vehicles at the best of times. Then I hit upon the scheme. A solid amount of good old Leadbelcher for the wings/fins/claws/pincers(??) with some Arkelian Green contrast in the gaps. I love that colour. Then comes Retributor Armour for the main body…I could have gone with Leadbelcher again, or something else, but I wanted gold on there somewhere. It just ended up a bit much.

The bodywork/spines/guns are all a simple Basilicanum Grey with the Arkelian Green again for highlights and ‘power’ bits. Then comes the spots in Mephiston Red.

I’m not going to lie, at this point the model looked like Pudsey Bear was rather ill. But I had faith in the magic that is GW washes. I threw Nuln oil on the Leadbelcher and Reikland Fleshshade on the Gold. It looked much better, much less garish. Not perfect, I’m still unsure about the spots and how much gold there is, but not bad. I finished it off with Astrogranite Debris followed by Drakenhof Nightshade on the base, which rounded out the model nicely.

What’s next? Well there are new Votann models out so we’ll just have to see what I can cook up.

Well it may not have gone the way you envisioned, but we think it came out pretty damn good in the end. I wonder, will you stick to Votann? Or will the Necrons tempt you back?

Vehicles

I’ve not got round to painting much recently but I do have some vehicles I’m looking to paint up for Warhammer 40K Wrath & Glory RPG. Rather than buy the preset 40K minis which I can’t justify buying, I’ve bought a few cheap vehicles from toy shops or Amazon and I’ll customise these. As you can see it is all work in progress at the moment.

We use the theatre of the mind a lot, but sometimes it is helpful to have visual aids for tactical encounters, so I’ve got a ‘long hauler’ lorry, which will do the trick for those encounters involving merchant raids etc. I took off the stickers and repainted it a dull grey and silver, with black ink wash for the detail and brown wash for oil colouring in places. There is still some work to do, but quite frankly it’ll do for RPG sessions even though not good enough for exhibition work.

It shows what you can do with limited resources to make a difference to your RPG scenes. In addition, I’ve bought two cars, one for Arbites and another painted up as a raider or even an ork battle wagon if I add more dakka and skulls etc. Finally, I have a scout car which I’ll probably not paint over since it’s nice as it is.

There are fast days and slow days in the world of painting, there is no shame in that, so long as you enjoy what you are doing. You certainly seem to have got that down, those vehicles are going to make excellent props for Wrath & Glory.
