Last-minute stocking fillers: Small boxes, huge fun!

Christmas is just around the corner, and if you’re anything like me, you’re currently staring mournfully into a collection of empty stockings wondering what to fill them with besides satsumas and disappointment. Fear not, fellow frantic shoppers! The best things come in small packages, and when it comes to board games, “small box” doesn’t mean small fun.

We’ve got a fantastic line-up of card and dice games that are all killer, no filler, guaranteed to be played on Christmas Day (and Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve…). Here are seven sensational stocking stuffers that prove big laughs fit perfectly into small spaces.

Fungi

Get ready for a delightful and surprisingly strategic walk through the woods. Fungi is a stunning two-player game about collecting sets of delicious (and sometimes poisonous!) mushrooms. You’ll use your foraging sticks to grab cards from the ever-shifting “forest” display, trading and cooking sets to earn points. It’s got a wonderfully quaint theme, beautiful artwork, and a perfect balance of push-your-luck and set-collection. The perfect treat for a quiet evening by the fire!

Love Letter

An absolute classic of micro-gaming. With just 16 cards, Love Letter manages to pack in deduction, risk-taking, and loads of hilarious eliminations. Your goal is simple: get your love letter to the Princess by the end of the round. You only ever hold one card, drawing a second and playing one on your turn. It’s fast, incredibly portable, and will have everyone trying to mind-read their way to victory. Quick to learn, impossible to put down.

Cockroach Poker

Despite the name, this has nothing to do with poker… apart from the pure, unadulterated bluffing! The aim is not to collect four of the same critter (cockroaches, rats, stink bugs, etc.). Players pass cards face down, declaring what critter is on it (truth or lie!), and the recipient must either call the bluff or peek and pass it on with a new claim. The result is total, side-splitting chaos. The ultimate party filler for maximum sneaky fun.

My Gold Mine

A brilliant, accessible push-your-luck race game perfect for the family. You’re dwarves trying to grab as much gold as possible from the mine before the dreaded dragon, Dragobert, catches you. Each turn, you risk digging deeper for more treasure or making a dash for the exit! It’s all about knowing when to stop, and watching your friends get too greedy is half the fun. Get rich or get dragon-fried!

Spots

This game is all about rolling handfuls of dice and completing adorable, spotted dog cards! It’s a fantastic push-your-luck dice game where you roll, try to place the pips on your dog cards, and avoid busting by collecting too many “buried” dice in your yard. Cute theme, satisfyingly chunky dice, and a lovely mix of strategy and chance. A top-tier dice-chucker that’s perfect for the whole family.

Hanamikoji

Don’t let the delicate theme fool you, this is an intense two-player card game of strategic tension. You are trying to win the favour of seven Geisha by influencing them with item tokens. The genius is in the action choices: on your turn, you only get four specific actions to draft and manipulate cards. The “I Cut, You Choose” mechanism means every decision feels crucial. Perfect for the person who loves deep strategy in a tiny package.

Coup

A high-speed, high-stakes game of bluffing and deduction. In Coup, you only have two face-down influence cards (your characters), but you can claim to be any character to use their powerful ability (like the Duke, who grants three coins, or the Assassin). If someone challenges your bluff, someone loses influence! It’s the ultimate short-form social deduction game where you are constantly trying to size up who’s telling the truth and who’s a liar. Brutal, brilliant, and done in fifteen minutes.

All of these small-box wonders prove you don’t need a massive, table-hogging game to have a massive amount of fun. They’re light enough to open and play immediately after the main present unwrapping chaos and small enough to shove into the nearest available empty stocking.

Happy stocking stuffing! Which of these quick-fire fillers are you hoping to find in your stocking this year?
