Island retreat

Gateway Island isn’t a traditional board game – it’s an invitation. A way to get introduced to the crazy and wonderful world of modern board gaming without diving into the deep end right away. When you’re first exploring the hobby, there’s so much to learn. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed:

“What do I like..? What will my friends like..? What even is a ‘push your luck’ game, or a ‘worker placement’ one?”

Gateway Island strips it all back to basics, offering 21 mini-games that span varying levels of complexity, strategy, and modern mechanics. It’s a bit like taking a scenic island tour – short stays, new experiences, and lots to discover.

Gateway Island strips it all back to basics, offering 21 mini-games that span varying levels of complexity, strategy, and modern mechanics. It’s a bit like taking a scenic island tour – short stays, new experiences, and lots to discover.

Island hopping

Each mini-game is printed on a jumbo card, complete with setup instructions and short, accessible rules. You’ll use a handful of shared components (disks, cubes, one die), and most games take under 15 minutes to play. I wouldn’t suggest trying out more than 3 of the islands (mini-games) in one session, as that could be a lot of new rules and mechanics for new players.

Before introducing my friends to a “heavier” game night feature – something like Pandemic or Scythe – I like to “hop onto one of the Gateway Islands”. We play a mini-game that mirrors the same mechanic we’ll find in the full-sized game.

It’s a great way to test the waters. There’s nothing worse than sinking a few hours into a game only to realize halfway through that it just doesn’t click with your group. Gateway Island saves you from that mistake and does it in a fun, low-stakes way.

Modern games demystified

Here’s what makes this a gateway: at the end of each mini-game, the card suggests 1–2 full board games that use the same mechanic. So if you loved bluffing & deduction, the booklet nudges you toward the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Gateway Island is also a gaming education and helps you pick which mini games. On the back of the rules, there is a game index which gives you mini game suggestions based on the level of strategy, complexity, play count and game mechanic. I used this a lot when trying to suss out what to play with different groups.

Final thoughts

Gateway Island is exactly what it says it is – a gateway. Not a game night centrepiece, but a brilliant tool for exploration. If you’re new to the hobby, teaching others, or just trying to figure out what kind of games click with your group, this is an incredibly smart and user-friendly resource.

For seasoned gamers? Think of it as your onboarding kit for friends and family. It saves time, sparks curiosity, and helps avoid long misfires at the game table.
