How does it play?
Molehill Meadows is a Flip & Write game in which players draw polyomino shapes onto a grid to create tunnels for Mika the mole.
This light, family-friendly game is suitable for players aged 8 and up, though younger children may be able to play depending on their abilities. It has a fast setup and typically takes about 20 minutes to play.
At the beginning of the game, two objective cards are randomly selected, which offer an opportunity for more victory points and direction during gameplay. Objectives may include tunnelling through specific flower colours or earning points for connecting particular paths.
Core Gameplay
The game is played by flipping cards with Tetris-like shapes, which players then draw onto their individual maps. A deck of 18 cards is used, with the first three cards played as “stones” that block Mika’s path. All subsequent cards are drawn as tunnels for Mika.
When drawing a tunnel, it must connect to an existing tunnel by touching only one face, unless you unlock a special worm ability (I’ll get to those in a moment).
Scoring & Unique Features
Points can be earned by linking paths on your map. These paths may include ants, daisies, and rivers.
Special abilities are granted through worm tokens, which allow players to perform actions like drawing an extra shape, connecting more than one face with a tunnel, or even storing a shape for a future turn.
Treasure coins are scattered across the map, granting immediate victory points when tunnelled over, equal to the coin’s value.
However, be cautious of molehills, as tunnelling over them results in negative points.
My thoughts on the game & why you might enjoy it.
The artwork in Molehill Meadows is charming and playful, with each polyomino card featuring a unique mole pose – including a particularly delightful “dab.”
As mentioned earlier this is a family friendly game, and you can play this a group or as a solo play.
For solo players, the rulebook includes a checklist that adds an extra layer of challenge.
The game comes in a compact, eco-friendly box, making it highly portable. However, the lack of multiple maps (grids) may limit replayability. Though the variety in objective and polyomino cards adds sufficient variability to keep things interesting.
Overall, Molehill Meadows is an engaging puzzle that works well as a fun filler game. If you enjoy Flip & Write games, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
