Stone Blade Entertainment has announced The Lord of the Rings: Ascension, a brand-new tabletop deckbuilding game set in the legendary world of Middle-earth.
Developed in partnership with Asmodee and Middle-earth Enterprises, the game reimagines the established Ascension system within the rich narrative landscape of The Lord of the Rings.
A New Journey Through Middle-earth
Designed for 1–4 players, The Lord of the Rings: Ascension unfolds across three interconnected sets, offering a campaign-style experience shaped by player decisions. Rather than retelling a fixed story, the game introduces branching paths, evolving challenges, and meaningful consequences - ensuring that each playthrough feels distinct.
Players will recruit heroes, acquire powerful cards, and build their strategy while navigating alliances and threats across Middle-earth. Central to the experience is the ever-present influence of The One Ring, introducing a layer of tension as players weigh power against corruption.
Classic Mechanics
At its core, the game builds on the familiar mechanics of the Ascension Deckbuilding Game, known for its accessible yet strategically rich gameplay. Here, those systems are adapted to reflect Tolkien’s world - bringing iconic factions like Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and Hobbits into play, alongside the looming threat of Mordor.
The design emphasises meaningful choice, with each decision carrying long-term impact. Whether rallying the Free Peoples or edging closer to the Shadow, players must carefully shape their approach to succeed.
Crowdfunding Incoming
The Lord of the Rings: Ascension is currently in development, with a crowdfunding campaign planned for later this summer. A full release is expected before the end of the year, with more details likely to emerge as the campaign approaches.
With its blend of narrative depth and proven deckbuilding systems, this latest adaptation looks set to offer a fresh way to experience one of fantasy’s most enduring worlds at the tabletop.
