The Call of Cthulhu starter set is hands down one of the best starter sets that I’ve ever set my eyes on. The quality of the starter set considering the price is top of the range. The items included and materials are of a high quality, which is always nice to see when you get a new game to play.
The Call of Cthulhu starter set allows you to start playing the Call of Cthulhu Tabletop role-playing game and introduces you to how the game system works. This is achieved with a book system, with book 1 which contains a starter adventure which is a solo introductory adventure for first time players. The adventure isn’t a long one, but the book does hold your hand throughout the whole adventure. This enables you to really get to grips with how to play the game and how the structure works in future adventures.
The book is laid out very neatly with clear definitions of how to progress in the adventure. This really helped me the first time I played the Call of Cthulhu starter as I found other games in the past quite complicated. Requiring me to repeatedly having to flip back and forth between the rules and the adventure.

This made the experience enjoyable and fun but also allowed a good understanding of the game to be achieved on the first time of play.
Book 2 Is the introductory rules book which again is well laid out with some lovely artwork within. This book explains the deeper aspects of the game and has a good Section for online resources which recommends what to search on Google and two links to YouTube videos to help players get into the game quicker. This was a nice touch as Can sometimes be difficult to find easy to follow help on the Internet. Having directs links recommended by the creators really helps the players get to grips quicker as there is less time sorting through rubbish.
Book 2 covers creating an investigator which again is well laid out straight to the point and easy to read and follow. It gives a section of sample investigator occupations which I find quite helpful as it gives me an idea of what I should be trying to create. The Section for skill descriptions is well done, it is very easy to read and easy to understand.
Then we move on to the game system, and we get to see how it works in more detail. This includes sanity combat hit points under awards of success along with the next steps.
Book three includes three starter adventures which allows a gamekeeper and players to improve their understanding of the game. The adventures aren’t very long, but they were fun for us which has increased out wanting to continue playing the Call of Cthulhu Role-playing game. I won’t go into detail about the adventures because that would ruin the fun but alongside really well written adventures, there is beautiful artwork and a great amount of helpful information within the books.
Overall, I’m really impressed with how the books have been laid out as you don’t see this in a lot of games.

Book 3: Three adventures for a Gamekeeper and Players to get stuck into.
5 ready made investigators.
Blank investigator sheets.
Six dice to play the game.
A set of handout props that are ready to use with the associated adventures.
Complexity Rating
The complexity of the game is actually not that high. Compared to some games that I have played such as Dungeons and Dragons. I find that sometimes the rules are not laid out in the best way. This makes it much harder for new players to understand how to play the game.
With The Call of Cthulhu starter set the complexity has been broken down into reasonable bite size chunks, so it is a lot easier to understand.
Artwork
The artwork throughout is absolutely beautiful, really detailed, and vibrant but at the same time also captures the heart of the horror aspect of the game. This is done with some very dark and creepy artwork that suits the game so well.
My Final Thoughts
If you are wanting to get into playing the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game then I 100% recommend tThe Call of Cthulhu starter set as a great introduction to the game series. The cost is very reasonable when you consider the amount of quality within the box set.
