Beacon Patrol Solo Review

Beacon Patrol game box against a blue backdrop featuring a red-and-white lighthouse and rescue boat

Overview

Beacon Patrol is a relaxing tile-placement game where players explore the sea, connect tiles, and try to achieve the highest possible score. The official solo mode is included in the box and follows a Beat Your Own Score (BYOS) approach, with different rankings depending on your final score.

With simple rules, fast setup, and a playtime of around 20 minutes, it is an accessible game that can be brought to the table with very little effort.

Complexity

Beacon Patrol is very easy to learn, making it suitable for both casual and experienced players. Despite its simplicity, placing tiles efficiently and making the best use of the available options can be surprisingly challenging.

Replayability

The random tile draw ensures that each game presents a different puzzle, while the two small expansions included in the box add some welcome variety and additional challenges.

There is also an interesting unofficial solo campaign that provides further motivation to revisit the game.

However, the BYOS approach eventually limits its longevity, as the challenge becomes less engaging once you consistently achieve high scores.

Interaction

Being a solo tile-placement puzzle, Beacon Patrol offers no direct player interaction. The challenge comes entirely from managing the available tiles and optimizing their placement rather than competing against an opponent.

Component Quality

The components are functional and well suited to the game. One minor drawback is the table space required, which can become surprisingly large for such a small and quick game.

Artwork

The artwork is pleasant and fits the peaceful maritime theme nicely. The visual presentation reinforces the relaxing atmosphere without distracting from the gameplay.

Solo Experience

The official solo mode is a straightforward Beat Your Own Score (BYOS) challenge, with different performance rankings based on your final score. There is no bot to manage, making the experience quick and relaxing.

The challenge comes from exploring the sea as efficiently as possible. You need to place tiles to create valuable connections and complete scoring areas, while carefully managing your ship's limited movement. Since you cannot always reach the ideal location for a tile, deciding where to sail and which areas to develop becomes surprisingly important. The random tile draw adds another layer of uncertainty, forcing you to adapt your plans rather than follow a fixed strategy.

This creates an interesting balance between tactical decisions and long-term planning, especially when trying to achieve the highest scoring ranks. However, once you become familiar with the puzzle and consistently reach good scores, the absence of an active opponent or changing objectives can reduce the motivation to replay.

Overall

Beacon Patrol is a charming and accessible solo puzzle that offers a relaxing experience with enough interesting decisions to remain engaging. The included expansions and unofficial campaign add welcome variety.

Its main weakness is the BYOS system, which gradually loses its appeal once you become familiar with the puzzle. Nevertheless, its simplicity, short playtime, and surprisingly satisfying challenge make it an enjoyable little game, particularly for occasional solo sessions.
