Ashes: Ascendancy solo review

Overview

Ashes: Ascendancy is a boss-battling card game that combines dice and card management in a very satisfying way. The game is fast to set up, usually plays in around 40 minutes, and its solo system is straightforward to manage.

The included decks work well out of the box, while deck construction provides an additional layer for players who want to explore the system more deeply.

Complexity

The basic rules are relatively easy to learn, while the combination of cards and dice creates plenty of interesting tactical decisions. Managing your hand, dice, and abilities efficiently is the core of the experience.

Replayability

This is where the core box struggles. With only two Phoenixborn and a single Dragonborn opponent, the variety is quite limited. The Dragonborn also feels relatively straightforward once you understand how it works.

There is a large amount of additional content available, including some PnP Phoenixborn, but expanding the game can quickly become expensive.

Interaction

As a boss-battling game, interaction comes from responding to the Dragonborn's actions while finding the right opportunities to attack and develop your own position. It creates a good back-and-forth feeling rather than simply being a score-based solo puzzle.

Component Quality

The component quality is fantastic. Everything feels well produced and functional, contributing to a polished experience on the table.

Artwork

The artwork is excellent and gives the different characters plenty of personality. The cards are attractive while remaining clear and functional during play.

Component Quality

The components are good and the custom dice are an important part of the game's appeal. Everything required for solo play is included in the core box.

Solo Experience

The solo system is very easy to manage and requires little upkeep, allowing you to concentrate on your cards and dice. Combined with the short setup and roughly 40-minute playtime, this makes Ashes: Ascendancy particularly easy to bring to the table.

The main issue is not the quality of the solo system but the limited content included in the box.

Overall

Ashes: Ascendancy offers an excellent combination of dice and card management, fast setup, and a smooth solo system. The core gameplay is highly enjoyable, but the base box simply does not provide enough variety, particularly with only two Phoenixborn and one relatively simple Chimera.

My overall rating applies specifically to the content of this box. With expansions, I would definitely consider it much higher, but reaching that level of variety requires a considerably larger investment.
