For me, Battle of Hoth is one of the most iconic Star Wars battle sequences. I can remember watching this film as a child (I’m not so old to have seen this at the cinema) and it was incredible. The opening scene of “The Empire Strikes Back” sees the Rebellion hiding out on the Ice planet of Hoth and very quickly the Empire discovers this location and they throw everything at this planet to take the Rebellion down. The action is intense with the huge AT-AT Walkers marching on to the Rebel base, the Rebels evacuating, are they going to get away? It’s amazing and now we as board gamers get to play this iconic battle.
The game is noted for 2-4 people but recommended for 2, which makes complete sense as the Rebels face the Empire.
Days of Wonder are the publishers of this one and it is noted to use a Command and Colours rule type mechanism. Players use their command cards each turn to activate their forces and decide how to move and attack off the back of this. It is noted the game can add further depth with leader cards (popular film characters) where their influence can sway the battle.
The game is available for pre-orders and should be coming out later in the Summer. However, the most exciting news is the game will be being exhibited at the UK Board Game Expo at the end of May 2025 and gamers will get the opportunity to take a look and hopefully be involved with some participation. Something to definitely check out amongst the thousands of other activities at the Ultimate UK boardgaming event.
I do appreciate a good Star Wars game and this is one I am definitely excited to set up on my table.
