Thief's Market second opinion

Board game setup featuring 'Thief's Market' box art with vibrant characters around a table of treasures. Colorful dice and game pieces scattered nearby. The scene conveys a playful and adventurous tone

Introduction

As a family, we are always looking for games that are quick to learn and easy to bring to the table, especially when time is limited. One of our favourite games is Splendour duel, as a result Thief's Market was highly recommended to us as an alternative game for the whole family. It doesn’t disappoint.

Thief's Market is a dice-based game that focuses on collecting cards and upgrading your abilities over the course of the game. It offers a mix of luck and decision-making, making it an accessible option for both younger players and adults.

Thief's Market as a light, fast-paced game that could be played in between heavier titles or as a standalone family game, and it fits that role well.

Unboxing

Thief's Market comes in a compact box with bright and colourful artwork that immediately stands out. The theme is light and playful, with a focus on gathering treasure rather than anything too serious.

Inside the box, the components are well produced. The dice are clear and easy to read, and the tokens and cards are of good quality. While there are quite a few pieces, everything feels durable and suitable for regular use.

Set up

Setup is relatively simple and only takes a few minutes. Each player is given a player card, and the market cards are laid out ready for play. For the first road only the market cards are used, round 2 adds the heist cards and round 3 adds the relic cards. The dice are placed in the centre, and the game is ready to begin.

After the first play, setup becomes much quicker, and it is something that children can help with or manage themselves once they are familiar with the process.

Game play

Board game setup on a woven rug featuring the "Thief’s Market" box, colorful player cards, and dice, conveying a strategic and playful atmosphere.

Gameplay in Thief's Market is easy to understand but still offers some interesting decisions. Each round, players roll dice and take turns selecting them to gain resources. These resources can then be spent on market cards that provide abilities, bonuses, or ways to score points.

The game introduces a dice drafting system, where players must choose which dice to take while also considering what they are leaving behind for others. This adds a level of interaction, as players can influence each other’s turns through their choices. I really enjoyed the dice drafting method used to decide which resources players receive, as it felt quite unique. However, it can also lead to some frustrating turns when the luck of the dice is not with you.

There is a balance between luck and planning. The dice rolls can vary each round, but players still need to think carefully about how to use their resources and which upgrades to prioritise. As the game progresses, the abilities you gain can make a noticeable difference, giving a sense of progression throughout the game.

Suitability

Thief's Market is well suited to families and players who enjoy lighter games with a mix of luck and decision-making. It works well with children who are comfortable with numbers and basic planning, and it can be a good step up from more basic dice games.

For more experienced players, the game may feel a little light over time. However, as a quick and enjoyable game that can be played without too much setup or explanation, it works very well.

The game does require a minimum of 3 players and has no 2-player option.

Final Thoughts

Thief's Market is a fun, easy-to-learn game that combines dice rolling with simple strategy. It offers enough decision-making to keep players engaged while remaining accessible for younger or less experienced gamers.

While it may not offer deep strategy, it succeeds as a quick and enjoyable game that is easy to bring to the table. For families or groups looking for a light, interactive game with a good pace, Thief's Market is a solid choice.
