Ragnarok Online is making the jump from computer screens to tabletops, and fans are already showing plenty of enthusiasm! The upcoming Ragnarok the Board Game: Ceremony of Prontera has raised more than six times its original crowdfunding target in just four days. Publisher Gravity launched the Kickstarter campaign on October 6, setting a funding goal of $50,000. It took just 10 minutes for the project to reach its target, before backing continued to pour in. Within four days, the total had climbed beyond $300,000, reaching more than 600% of its original goal. The campaign is still running until November 6, giving fans more time to support the project and secure a copy of the tabletop adventure.
Ragnarok Online comes to the tabletop
Ragnarok the Board Game: Ceremony of Prontera is a dungeon-crawling adventure for one to four players, inspired by the original Ragnarok Online. The classic MMORPG first brought players into a colourful fantasy world filled with monsters, quests, character progression and plenty of loot. Now, Gravity is looking to recreate that experience around a board game table, translating familiar elements from the online game into a physical adventure. Players will create their characters, select an initial job class and explore Prontera and its surrounding regions as they work to become more powerful. Along the way, they'll encounter quests, collect equipment and resources, and eventually face off against some of the game's most formidable enemies.
The experience also incorporates familiar progression systems from Ragnarok Online. Players can advance into second-tier job classes, develop their characters and take on increasingly challenging encounters as their adventure unfolds. For longtime fans, that means plenty of recognisable elements to discover. Rather than simply borrowing the game's fantasy setting, Ceremony of Prontera aims to bring its central gameplay systems into a new format.
Strategic combat and iconic monsters
The board game uses a card-driven system to recreate the skills and abilities associated with the original MMORPG. Players will need to consider their available options as they navigate encounters, with monster-specific behaviour patterns adding another layer to the tactical experience. Different enemies can present different challenges, encouraging players to think carefully about their approach rather than relying on the same strategy for every battle. The adventure also features encounters with MVP monsters, powerful enemies that should provide a fitting challenge for players who have spent time developing their characters and collecting equipment.
With support for solo play as well as groups of up to four, the game offers flexibility for players who want to explore the world alone or team up with friends. Combining character progression, dungeon crawling and strategic card-based combat could make Ceremony of Prontera an appealing option for fans of the original game, while its familiar setting may also attract board gamers looking for a fantasy adventure.
Four pledge options available
The Kickstarter campaign offers four reward tiers: Standard, Deluxe, All-in Standard and Early Bird All-in Deluxe. Depending on the package selected, pledges range from $65 to $199. The different tiers give backers a choice between the core offering and more comprehensive packages, although anyone considering backing should check the campaign page for the precise contents and current availability of each option. The campaign is scheduled to close on November 6, with shipping expected to begin in December. Backers should consult the official Kickstarter page for the latest fulfilment details as the project progresses.
Gravity thanks fans for their support
Gravity has credited the strong early response to the enthusiasm of Ragnarok fans, many of whom are eager to experience the world of Prontera in a different way. Park Jin-on, the company's IP Business Team Leader, thanked supporters for getting behind the campaign and explained the team's intention to bring familiar parts of the MMORPG into a collectible tabletop format.
"We brought everything from Prontera, the iconic city you used to experience purely through a screen, to the skills and core content into a board game format, making this a genuinely collectible item for any Ragnarok fan," Park said.
He also expressed hope that players would create new memories with the tabletop adaptation and encouraged fans to continue supporting the campaign. With its funding target surpassed in just minutes and more than $300,000 raised within four days, Ragnarok the Board Game: Ceremony of Prontera has made a strong start. The campaign remains open until November 6, with shipping currently planned to begin in December.
