For me, this feels incredibly overdue. The last time a Smash Up expansion was released was back in 2023 with “Excellent movies, dudes!” making 2024 perhaps the first year without a boxed set expansion release since the game was first released in 2012 when the game first came out. This seems somewhat unbelievable and I struggle to believe this core product of Alderac Entertainment group has lost momentum. I think it’s a fantastic franchise as they can literally do anything with it, and they have been.
There is a Facebook fan group called “Smashposting” (which I love as a title) that this last week or so has been leaking out new content each and every day of new game content. They have been showing new game cards and you always wonder if this is real or someone’s fan art/home projects. However, the content has been snowballing, giving more and more away with real detail on a new game that is coming and it is exciting. I’m not sure who Chris Johnston is, this is the person sharing all this lovely content, but they are playing a big part it would seem in releasing this content and they very much seem in the know.
If it is true, 3 of the 4 expansion factions have been given away. The content has gone back to look alike content as opposed to the Op games content with Disney and Marvel Smash Ups that were fully licensed. However we are seeing a faction likened to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, another like G.I.Joe and another like Hee Man and the masters of the Universe. It looks great and as always runs seamlessly with all existing. The 4th faction is not fully clear yet, there is chatter but nothing concrete.
The bigger and more exciting news is a new game mechanic that appears to be coming with it. The game has always revolved around minions and actions. On a turn a player can play one of each. There is talk of a Fusion card, these are cards that can be used as a Minion or as an action as they have the choice of either. I’m intrigued and look forward to seeing more detail here on what may be to come of this additional game rule. Also, within this and critically how the game balance is maintained.
There is nothing solid with this news. It is all social media based either on Facebook or Reddit, nothing too official yet but I am truly hopeful something new for Smash Up is on the way and, given the detail in the card art, in the very near future.
