Calling all adventurers, roguelike fans, and tabletop warriors – Contention Games has just dropped the bombshell: a brand‑new expansion for the Slay the Spire board game is on the horizon, and it flips the script entirely. The expansion is titled Downfall, and with the cryptic tagline “Once protectors, now you are the Slayers. Return to the Spire … Downfall coming soon to Kickstarter!”, it promises a darker turn of events for those who thought they knew the Spire well.
What Is Slay the Spire?
For those new to the game, Slay the Spire is a cooperative deck-building experience where 1–4 players take on the role of adventurers climbing a mysterious and dangerous spire. Along the way, players battle monsters, acquire powerful relics, and fine-tune their decks to survive increasingly difficult encounters. The game blends strategic card play with rogue-like progression — meaning no two runs are ever quite the same.
Each character has their own unique card pool and playstyle, and teamwork is essential as players face bosses and make tough choices at branching paths. The board game does a remarkable job of capturing the spirit of the original video game, and it’s become a firm favourite with both solo and co-op board gamers.
What Could Downfall Bring?
The teaser for Downfall hints at a major narrative and mechanical shift. “Once protectors, now you are the Slayers” suggests that players may no longer be the heroic climbers of old — instead, you might take on a new role entirely. Could players now control bosses? Could the game flip to a “defend the Spire” mode where you fight off invading heroes? Or might it introduce entirely new characters with morally grey motives?
We don’t yet have concrete information on how Downfall will play — whether it’s an asymmetric experience, a new campaign mode, or simply adds fresh content to the base game — but the possibilities are intriguing.
