Pokémon Goita brings a classic board game back

The Pokémon Company is trying something a little different this winter, and it doesn’t involve a new Tera gimmick, a remake, or a mobile event. Instead, it’s diving into traditional tabletop territory with Pokémon Goita, a Pokémon-themed take on the long-running Japanese board game Goita. The set launches in Japan on December 18, 2025, priced at 2,970 yen (around £14.50), and early listings at import shops like Meccha Japan suggest worldwide shipping won’t be hard to find.

If you haven’t crossed paths with Goita before, don’t stress – it’s a fast, team-based game that sits somewhere between light strategy and quick, back-and-forth tile play. The Pokémon edition seems designed to make it as approachable as possible: while the rulebook and upcoming companion app are in Japanese, the actual tiles use English labels, so anyone familiar with the basics of Goita should be able to jump right in.
How Pokémon Goita Works

Pokémon Goita sticks to the classic 2v2 format. Each team races to hit 150 points, playing tiles each turn as either an attack or a defence. A hand ends once all tiles have been played, and the scoring pushes teams closer to that finish line. It’s simple enough to teach in a few minutes but has that “one more round” pull once you’ve got the rhythm down.

The Pokémon twist comes from the tile lineup, which mixes recognizable monsters with the traditional Goita roles they represent. The full set includes:

  • 10 Points: Pidgeot (Pawn)
  • 20 Points: Ponyta (Knight), Rattata (Lance)
  • 30 Points: Raichu (Gold), Pikachu (Silver)
  • 40 Points: Charizard (Rook), Dragonite (Bishop)
  • 50 Points: Mew (King), Mewtwo (King)

It’s a straightforward roster, but one that hits a nice mix of nostalgia, popularity, and a few iconic heavy-hitters.

The reveal also came with a first trailer and a batch of screenshots showing the tile art and box design – bright, clean, and very “Pokémon,” as expected. If you’ve ever wanted to pair a centuries-old game style with a Charizard cameo, this is pretty much the perfect crossover.

Will It Release Outside Japan?

Right now, there’s no confirmed global release. However, given that import stores are already accepting pre-orders, getting your hands on a set shouldn’t be too difficult if you’re outside Japan. And this isn’t Pokémon’s first dip into reimagined tabletop classics – fans might remember the earlier Pokémon Nine Tiles variant.

For now, Pokémon Goita officially launches December 18, 2025 in Japan. Whether it travels farther afterward remains to be seen, but it’s already shaping up to be one of the more charming and unexpected Pokémon merch drops this year.
